Chia seed oil has gained significant recognition in the skincare industry for its numerous beneficial properties. Extracted from the seeds of the Salvia hispanica plant, chia seed oil is packed with essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. When applied topically, it helps nourish and hydrate the skin, promoting a healthy and radiant complexion. The high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in chia seed oil helps strengthen the skin’s barrier function, reducing moisture loss and preventing dehydration.

Additionally, the potent antioxidants present in chia seed oil combat free radicals, protecting the skin against environmental stressors and premature ageing. Its anti-inflammatory properties also make it effective in soothing and calming irritated or sensitive skin. Chia seed oil is lightweight and easily absorbed, making it suitable for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. With this in mind, we’ve curated a list of our favourite products which contain this fabulous ingredient:

The Connection Between Gut Health and Skin Health

The connection between gut health and skin health has become a hot topic in recent years, as scientists and healthcare practitioners have come to understand the importance of the gut-skin relations in overall health and well-being. The gut-skin axis refers to the relationship between the gut microbiome and the skin, and how imbalances in the gut can manifest as skin issues.

The gut microbiome is the collection of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract, which includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes. These microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining digestive health, immune function, and overall well-being. When the balance of these microorganisms is disrupted, it can lead to a condition known as dysbiosis, which has been linked to a variety of health problems, including skin issues.

Studies have shown that the gut microbiome can directly influence the health of the skin. For example, a study [1] published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that mice with imbalanced gut microbiota had more severe symptoms of skin inflammation and dermatitis than mice with healthy gut microbiota. Another study [2] published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that patients with acne had a higher prevalence of intestinal dysbiosis compared to those without acne.

One reason for this connection is the fact that the gut microbiome plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, it can lead to increased inflammation in the body, which can manifest as skin issues such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. Additionally, the gut microbiome is involved in the production of certain nutrients that are essential for skin health, such as vitamin D and vitamin K.

Furthermore, the gut-skin axis is also influenced by the gut-brain axis, which refers to the communication between the gut and the brain. The gut-brain axis is responsible for regulating many bodily functions, including digestion, metabolism, and stress response. When the gut-brain axis is disrupted, it can lead to increased stress and anxiety, which can also manifest as skin issues.

There are several ways to support gut health and promote healthy skin. One of the most important is to eat a healthy, balanced diet that is rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. This can help to promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and reduce inflammation in the body.

In addition to diet, there are several other lifestyle factors that can impact gut health and skin health. For example, getting regular exercise, managing stress, and getting enough sleep are all important for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome and promoting overall well-being.

The bottom line is, the connection between gut health and skin health is a complex and multifaceted one. By understanding the role that the gut microbiome plays in skin health, we can take steps to support our gut health and promote healthy, radiant skin. Whether it’s through diet, exercise, or other lifestyle factors, there are many ways to support the gut-skin axis and promote optimal health and well-being.

How to Move Away from Face Wipes Without Losing the Convenience

New legislation banning the sale of some kinds of face wipes is being proposed in England. They can be a convenient way to remove make-up when sleepiness gets the better of you. But under new plans proposed by environment minister Thérèse Coffey, you may not be able to get your hands on your go-to face wipes from as early as next year. There are several ways to move away from face wipes without losing the convenience they offer. Here are some suggestions:

Micellar Water

Micellar water is a type of cleanser that has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially as a makeup remover. It’s made up of tiny oil molecules called micelles that are suspended in water. These micelles attract and lift away dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin without the need for harsh scrubbing or rubbing. One of the benefits of micellar water is that it’s gentle and suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It doesn’t contain harsh chemicals or detergents that can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation.

Muslin Cloths

Muslin cloths are often used to cleanse the face because they offer a gentle and effective way to remove dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin. Muslin is a lightweight and breathable fabric that is typically made from cotton, and it has a gentle texture that can help to exfoliate and smooth the skin. Using a muslin cloth to cleanse your face can help to remove dead skin cells, improve circulation, and stimulate cell renewal, leaving your skin looking brighter and more radiant. Additionally, the gentle friction created by the muslin cloth can help to loosen and remove impurities from the skin, which can be particularly beneficial for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Cleansing Balms

Cleansing balms are a type of facial cleanser that typically have a thicker, more emollient texture than traditional liquid or foaming cleansers. They are designed to dissolve and remove dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin, while also providing a nourishing and hydrating effect. When applied to the skin, they melt and transform into a silky, smooth texture that can be massaged into the skin to help dissolve impurities and gently exfoliate dead skin cells. One of the benefits of cleansing balms is that they are usually gentle and effective for all skin types, including dry and sensitive skin.

Cleansing Oils

Unlike traditional foaming cleansers that can strip the skin of its natural oils, cleansing oils help to maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier, leaving it feeling soft and supple. The oil in the cleanser binds to the oils on your skin and any makeup or impurities, allowing them to be easily washed away with water. Many cleansing oils also contain emulsifiers, which allow them to be rinsed off with water, leaving no oily residue. They can also be particularly beneficial for those with dry or sensitive skin, as they provide a gentle and hydrating cleanse without stripping the skin.

Reusable Makeup Remover Pads

Reusable makeup remover pads are eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to disposable makeup remover wipes, and are usually much better for your skin, too. They are typically made of soft, absorbent fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, or microfibre, which can effectively remove makeup without causing irritation to the skin. These pads can be used multiple times and are easy to clean. Simply rinse them with water and mild soap, or toss them in the washing machine with your regular laundry. This makes them not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective and convenient in the long run.

Get Marathon Ready with our Skincare Guide for Runners

The London Marathon is just over a week away and runners all over the UK are preparing to take part in one of the most gruelling events of their running career. More than 40,000 people run together in London in a celebration of positivity, diversity and inclusion, raising over £1 billion for various good causes, since it began in 1981. With this in mind, we thought we’d do our bit and share with you some skincare tips which will make running the marathon a bit easier – or even just improve your couch-to-5k, if the marathon is a bit beyond your abilities!

Wear Sunscreen

Ahead of running a marathon, or any race where you’ll spend a lot of time outside, applying sunscreen is SO important. The last thing you want is to be coming up on mile 25 and realising you’re red from sunburn, not exertion. Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50 is a sheer solar protection treatment that defends against prolonged skin damage from UV light and environmental assault, and offers 40 minutes of water resistance, meaning you won’t sweat it all off during your first mile.

Cleanse Properly

After running the marathon, your skin is going to need some serious cleansing. As well as being subjected to potentially hours of sweat, you’re also going to want to remove all of that grime and pollution which is inevitable in a city. Dermalogica Precleanse is the professional’s deep cleansing weapon, allowing you to achieve ultra clean and healthy skin with a double cleansing regimen which should also include Dermalogica Daily Glycolic Cleanser, to help remove build-up caused by environmental factors.

Replenish Lost Moisture

When we run long distances, our body loses a lot of moisture, some of which you’ll replace by drinking. However, your skin often still needs an extra boost of hydration to get it back to its best. We suggest first treating your skin to a Maskology Hyaluronic Acid Professional Sheet Mask, followed by Aromatherapy Associates Hydrating Triple Rose Renewing Moisturiser. The combination of these treatments will replenish lost moisture and protect your skin from further loss of hydration, going forward.

Don’t Forget Your Lips

There’s a reason that Aussie cricketers look like they’ve got white lipstick on – it’s because they know that spending hours running around in the sunshine can damage the delicate skin on our lips! Elemis Ultra-Conditioning Lip Balm is an instantly hydrating lip treatment, which offers effective delivery and release of the hyaluronic acid molecules to ensure even the driest lips feel replenished, restored and hydrated.

Soothe Sore Limbs

One of the main issues that people deal with, from their post-marathon body, is tired, heavy legs which can leave you feeling like you’re dragging logs around for days afterwards. Bloom and Blossom Legs Eleven Cooling Leg Serum is a lightweight formula with stimulating peppermint leaf oil to revitalise tired, aching legs. It contains aloe vera leaf juice, which is full of vitamins and antioxidants to give your legs a boost, while algin from seaweed, which is rich in polysaccharides, helps the skin to absorb moisture easily, allowing the serum to effortlessly soak into your skin.

If you’ve heard of the Hay’ou brand before, it’s more than likely that it’s because you’ve seen their range of luxury quartz beauty tools and bamboo body tappers. However, you might be surprised to learn that the brand also offers other products, such as oils and body washes, all of which work synergistically with their tools to give you an aromatherapy treatment which can rebalance your mind and body. Here are five of our favourites:

Hayo’u Revive Body Oil

Body oils are an incredible multitasking product which can benefit both body and mind. Hayo’u Revive Body Oil has been created for self-massage purposes and has ingredients which both benefit the skin and have therapeutic properties through fragrance, too. It’s made from iconic Chinese ingredients, such as lotus flower, frankincense and ylang ylang, which are intensely nourishing and hydrating for your skin.

Hayo’u Mineral Bath

Bathing is a fantastic way to help to relax your muscles and slow down amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. This potent blend of nutrient-rich rose quartz, Himalayan pink salt and lotus flower, frankincense and ylang ylang essential oils help you to deeply relax, rescue and replenish. The formulation is naturally paraben, SLS and SLES free, and does not contain mineral oil or petrolatum, giving you added peace of mind.

Hayo’u Mineral Shower Wash

If you don’t have a bathtub, don’t like baths or simply don’t have the time to soak, you don’t have to forego the benefits of Hayo’u products altogether. Hayo’u Mineral Shower Wash is packed with iconic Chinese ingredients such as lotus flower, frankincense and ylang ylang, all of which have been used for thousands of years to improve circulation and reduce stress. Rescue and rebalance with this intensely invigorating shower wash and start the day feeling refreshed and energised.

Hayo’u Revive Beauty Oil

While we’re not focusing on gua shas today, this beauty oil from Hayo’u is intended to be used with a gua sha or other beauty tool for facial massage, though it can be used on its own. It also contains lotus flower, frankincense and ylang ylang, but with slow absorption to protect skin during this powerful massage. Perfect for gua sha, or as a deeply nourishing treat for your skin, in the morning or at bedtime.

Hayo’u Scented Candle

Nothing says aromatherapy quite like a scented candle, and this one from Hayo’u contains the same fragrance notes as the other products we’ve mentioned above. This allows you to create an environment of peace and tranquillity while using Hayo’u products, knowing that they all complement each other perfectly. The candle, which contains lotus flower, frankincense and ylang ylang, also has lemongrass and will instantly help to reduce stress and anxiety, relax your nervous system and boost your mood. It has an epic burn time of 55 hours, is housed in environmentally friendly plastic-free packaging and contains no mineral oil or petrolatum.
