We all know that a good skincare routine is important, but during the warm, sunny summer months it is even more critical.

Whatever your skin type, prickly heat, sunburn, rashes and irritation are all possible if you spend time in the heat, so it is vital to get things right so you don’t end up red and in pain.

We have some easy to put into practise tips, that will help you keep skin safe all year round.

Drink water
Yes, this again. It is really important to make sure you drink plenty of water when you are out in the sun, on the beach, by the pool or exercising outside. When the sun is out your body loses more moisture than usual and this can lead you to becoming dehydrated which will make your skin look, and feel, tired, tight and uncomfortable.

Use protection properly
So many people underestimate the power of the sun, even when it is hiding behind clouds, and this is a huge mistake. Whatever you skin tone, we suggest using a sunscreen that has a minimum SPF of 30 and to apply it to your face and body at least 30 minutes before going outside. If you are in the sun for more than a few hours, it’s really important to top up every couple of hours, and also apply after swimming. Some people mix tanning oil with sunscreen but we don’t suggest doing this because some key ingredients can interact and make your sunscreen less effective, putting you in danger.

Deal with the fallout
Even if you do your best to look after your skin, you may well end up suffering from prickly heat, sunburn and irritation. Don’t panic and do not rub or itch your skin as this can make it worse, instead, place natural yoghurt on the affected area for approximately 15 minutes, then pat dry with cold water and try to rest up. You can also use a good after sun product and keep out of the sun the next day to prevent further damage.

Try natural oils
Using natural essential oils on your face and body at night, can give your skin the extra conditioning it needs. Natural oils are a great way to moisture and sooth the skin, when it has been exposed to the sun and is suffering the effects of heat.

Remember to cleanse, tone and mositurise
It is really important not to forget to cleanse your skin as this will keep pores clean and complexions clear. Breakouts can be inevitable when your skin gets hot and bothered but if you stick to the rules of cleanse, tone and moisturise, you will help you and your skin stay healthy in the sun.

Try to exfoliate
It is important to remember to exfoliate your skin during the summer as this will remove dead skin cells and improve blood circulation which means your skin will be glowing. If you don’t get rid of these cells, they will sit on your skin and it will look dull and grey, plus the build-up of dirt, suncream and moisturisers can cause irritation and spots, and we can all do without those.

Cover up
Sunglasses, hats and sleeves in the midday sun are all good practise when it is hot and the sun it beating down on you. While you might want a tan, looking after your skin is much better than anything else in the long run and there are some really cute trends on the high street right now, so you can be safe and look fab.

Pure Beauty

From the moment you set outside your front door in the morning, your skin is hit by a deluge of dirt, grime, pollution and sweat, as well as your beauty products.

At the end of each day it is vital to clear away all of this, as well as your make-up, and we are here to help and ensure that your skin is clean and refreshed before you get into bed at night and go to sleep.

Whatever your skin type, you can rid it of impurities, without disturbing your natural moisture balance, with the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. This soap-free, gel thoroughly removes the dirt you don’t want, and keeps the goodness you need, thanks to naturally-foaming Quillaja Saponaria. With added Lavender Extract mixed into the cleansing action, you are left with soft, clean skin whatever the day has thrown at you.

We don’t know about you, but some products actually dehydrate our skin, rather than hydrating it, which means it is left feeling tight and uncomfortable? We are pleased to say that this won’t happen with the Elemis Rehydrating Rosepetal Cleanser, which effectively removes make-up and the build-up of skin pollutants without taking away the moisture that keeps it looking plump and dewy. Vitamin E and F have been blended with Rose Petal Flower Water which together hydrate and purify even the most sensitive skin, leaving it restored, clean and radiant.

The Jan Marini Age Intenrention Gentle Cleanser is a mild, non-irritating formula which means it is perfect for sensitive skin, including the eye area. While it is gentle and non-foaming, thanks to Green Tea, Grape Seed Extract and Chamomile Extract, it gets to work on the dirt, but doesn’t take away the goodness even when used multiple times a day.

If you love your make up but you don’t want it to impact your skin, the Decleor Bi-phase Caring Cleanser and Makeup Remover could be your new beauty bestie. Created from a revolutionary formulation that is powered by a scientific blend of virgin botanical oils and floral water will cleanse, remove make-up (even stubborn waterproof types), soften, plump and soothe skin and help boost radiance. Phew, that’s a lot of goodness, so why not give it a go.

Want to take things up a notch or two when it comes to cleansing? If that’s the case then the Dermalogica Precleanse is the deep cleansing weapon of the professionals, and could be yours too. This fab product gives you ultra clean, healthy skin and works alongside your daily cleanser. Suitable for all skin types, Olive and Kukui oils melt layers of excess sebum, sunscreen, environmental pollutants and residual skin products that build-up during the day. Conditioning Rice Bran and Vitamin E not only nourish the eye area but are on hand to remove that annoying waterproof mascara that never wants to budge.

If you haven’t tried the Elemis Deep Cleanse Facial Wash yet, where have you been? This brilliant, fast-acting gel really is the ultimate daily cleansing solution for all skin types and it looks pretty slick too. A totally potent blend of Oak Bark, Spearmint and Peppermint has been added to a Milk Protein base and together the heady ingredients not only remove impurities but decongest the skin and leaves it clean, revived and totally refreshed.

Got a question, or want to try before you buy? Get in touch today and we can help with more info and send you some samples too.

Dermalogica Foaming Wash

With the air turning sharper and the days getting shorter, we might still be wearing flip-flops and driving with the sunroof down, but it would seem that autumn is on the way. As well as bringing out those favourite sweatshirts and boots, now is also time to think about your complexion as the season changes.

At Pure Beauty we sell some world-class cleansers which will ensure you are ready for autumn and today we are looking at just a handful and hope there will be one which is right for you.

If your face is feeling tight and dry, why not ease things up with the Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution? This rich, creamy cleanser nourishes dry skin and sweeps away impurities, but those all-important moisture levels are maintained. Essential C and E Vitamins have been combined with Safflower Oil, Rosemary and Lemon, which together help condition and refresh your skin and leave it ready for your toner and mosituriser to do their thing.

If you want to repair and balance combination or problematic skin, you need the help of the outstanding Elemis Balancing Lime Blossom Cleanser. Extracts of Lime Blossom, Lecithin (aka Vitamin F) and Vitamin E help balance excess oils and soothe the skin while removing the build-up of daily dirt as well as make-up. The light, non-sticky texture makes this cleaner a pleasure to use and the results make it even easier to love.

For teenagers with acne or breakout prone skin that can be even more temperamental as the weather changes, we have the excellent Dermalogica Foaming Wash, which is part of the Clear Start range. Not only does this deep clean and purify the skin, it also energises and refreshes it all without stripping those key natural essential oils. Natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients have been blended together and when massaged into wet skin the formula breaks up dead skin cells and clears away trapped oil which helps wipe out existing and future breakouts. Phew!

If you are looking for lather when you cleanse, look no further than the Jan Marini C-ESTA Cleansing Gel. This outstanding, potent Vitamin C cleanser is suitable for all skin type and the luxurious lather helps soothe and protect your skin. As this cleanser is highly concentrated, only a small amount is needed morning and night to see results which will make you smile.

The Decleor Bi-phase Caring Cleanser and Makeup Remover is a new cleanser on the beauty block and one which is powered by a scientific blend of botanical oils and floral water. Impressed? We think you will be. The ‘revolutionary’ formula cleanses your skin, removes you make-up (even waterproof mascara cannot escape) and also plumps and soothes even the most sensitive skin so it is soft and radiant once again.

Time for one last recommendation and we think the Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser deserves a mention. Regular use of this product will help drier and prematurely ageing skin become super smooth and ultra-clean. The Lactic Acid concentrate re-textures skin, antioxidant Vitamin E conditions and Rose Flower Oil gets to work calming the pesky sensitivity that can really get you down. What’s not to like?

If you’d like further details about these, or any of the products we sell, get in touch today and our team would love to help.

Let’s face it, there are better things to do with our time than clean our homes, but it is a necessary evil unless you want to live in a mess, or have the cash to pay someone to do it for you.

One of the biggest mistake people make when they are cleaning is to do it room by room (aka ‘zone cleaning’) which is slow and you can do it much faster, and better, if you take a different approach.

Focussing on just one area, may mean doing a great job on your counters which will sparkle and shine, but the cooker will still be dirty and as for the bathroom, well you won’t get time to go there if you are too busy folding the ironing for the next morning.

The reality is, if you put a system in place that is quick and efficient, you will have more time to do the things you really love.

Pick a Day
It can be any day, but pick a day when you can really get on top of your cleaning and this will automatically take some of the pressure off. We know this sounds daft, but doing this will make the rest of your week so much easier and you can get your partner, flatmate or kids doing jobs too! Maybe go for Sunday morning and then you can reward yourself with a roast dinner (wiping up gravy of course), or a Friday afternoon before you go out and then you can really let your hair down knowing it is done.

Start by Dusting
Dust each room, including the tops of all your furniture, the undersides of shelves and the books, as well as picture frames, TV screens and the bits and pieces we all collect that don’t really have a home. The best way to do this is to dust dry, when things are wet is so much harder. If you want to get rid of smudges and finger prints then use a clean microfibre cloth and good quality polish.

Clean Fabrics
Putting on the washing as you clean will make the most of your time and it will feel like everything is clean in your home, for a little while at least. Strip and remake the bed beds, tidy cushions and put throws back onto sofas neatly, vacuum your curtains and clean animal beds out too.

Clean Mirrors and Glass
Wipe down all the mirrors and windows in your home as they pick up a lot of dust and when the sun shines, it will show up and look like you haven’t cleaned for ages. One handy tip is to use one wet and one dry microfiber cloth as this will clean away dust and dirt but won’t leave behind lines and streaks.

Clean your Surfaces
Wipe down all the surfaces and counters in your home in one go. Move from room to room, disinfecting if necessary, and make sure you clean door handles, light switches, TV remotes, mobile devices and phones as these are full of nasty germs. If you have any illness or bugs in the home, make sure you do this at least once a day to stop anything spreading! Also leave cleaning items in bathrooms so you can wash during the week and prevent a massive build up of dirt to tackle on cleaning day. If you can, use environmentally sound protects, wear gloves to protect your hands, and always apply cream when you are done.

Get to Grips with the Bathroom and Kitchen
Walk through your bathroom and kitchen, spraying cleaner on your baths, sinks and toilets as you go – not on the carpets or floors of course. Then return and clean the bathroom and wash shower curtains and towels once the bedding is done. When it comes to the kitchen, wipe down the inside of the microwave, as well as cabinet and appliance doors before getting to work on the sink and table tops. Empty and bleach the bins so they are really clean and make sure everything sparkles, including the draining board.

Next to the Floors
Sweep, then mop or scrub the bathroom and kitchen floors, making sure you really get to those hard to clean areas as this is where nasties can hide and bacteria can hide.

Get the Vacuum Out
Last of all, vacuum the carpers in your bedrooms, down the stairs, through the living room and into the hallway, moving furniture so you get rid of the dust that can make you cough.

Now, put the kettle on and admire your hard work as you enjoy a cup of tea.

Five Things Which Could Be Making Your Hair Greasy

Five Things Which Could Be Making Your Hair Greasy

Royalty-free image

When you’re a teen, you have this vision that adulthood will be a time of clear skin and perfect hair, so it can be a major disappointment to get way into your adult years and still be dealing with issues like adult acne or lank locks. Some people say that hormones contribute to greasy hair but there are also a few other things that you could be doing which is exacerbating the problem. Read on to see where you might be going wrong:

Too Much Washing

Just like if you have an oily face, the problem can be that you’re trying to keep it too clean and your body is pushing back by over producing the oils that you’re stripping away. If you’re a daily hair washer because you’re trying to combat grease, try cutting back to 2-3 times a week. The first week might be a “wearing a hat or staying indoors” kinda week while your stressed-out scalp adjusts, but it will eventually reset itself and work with your new, less intense, hair washing regime.

The Wrong Conditioner

Again, just like with your facial moisturiser, some people need something lighter and some need something more intense. If you have greasy hair, you really don’t need a super-heavy conditioner, and taking the product all the way up to your roots is another big no-no. Use Dermalogica Daily Conditioning Rinse just on the ends and midsection of your hair to keep it soft and manageable without adding to your grease problem.

Wash Your Brushes!

Okay, we know we’re really stretching this “your scalp is just like your face” analogy, but in the same way that you wouldn’t use dirty body brushes, make-up brushes and beauty blenders, you shouldn’t be using a dirty brush on your hair. Not only do they collect grease and bacteria, they could also be harbouring build-up of old products, so dragging that whole mess through your hair day after day is doing you no favours! Use a comb or your fingers to pull any old hair out of the bristles and then wash it thoroughly with a mild shampoo to get it back to best.

Brush it Less

While we’re on the subject of brushing, you probably need to do it less if your hair is greasy. Greasy hair happens as a result of your scalp producing too much sebum and brushing too much can actually stimulate this oil production. Try to brush your hair once a day ONLY, and if you really need to brush it more than that try to just brush the ends to keep it knot-free.

Use a Clarifying Shampoo

When you’re prone to greasy hair, it’s tempting to use a lot of different products, like dry shampoo, which improve the appearance of greasy hair even for the short term. However, these products tend to build up on your hair and the overall result makes lank hair look even more lank. Try to use a clarifying shampoo which will properly rid your hair and scalp of any residue from products to make sure that your hair and scalp have a proper chance to breathe and reset themselves.
