Summer isn’t the only time to go on holiday.
With children back at school and prices back to normal, autumn is the perfect time to book a romantic city break or enjoy a weekend away with the girls somewhere new.
Brussels is a chic, multicultural powerhouse set in the heart of Belgium that is a joy to visit. Steeped in culture and history it is easy to while away the day exploring tourist sites, popping into shops and galleries and enjoying beer and chocolate in one of the many pubs, cafés or bars dotted along the pretty streets. If it’s art you are after, Brussels was home to the Surrealist artist, Rene Magritte, and the Musée Magritte is well worth a visit. By night hang out in the beautifully illuminated at Grote Markt and soak up the infectious European vibe.
It might be a cliché, but if you’re looking for a romance, it has to be Paris. The city is enveloped in love and you can stroll hand in hand as you explore the magical streets. From the world-famous Louvre and Eiffel Tower to Versailles and the Moulin Rouge, you really are spoilt for choice. After a lie in and lazy brunch, spend the day sightseeing and shopping, then take a walk along the Seine at dusk and have dinner by candlelight. Perfect.
Meandering waterways scattered with quirky houseboats and lined with beautiful trees are part and parcel of a weekend in Amsterdam. This stunning city is packed with museums and galleries, coffee shops and boutiques and is just an hour away from the UK. Explore the cobbled streets by bike, enjoy stroopwafels (thin waffles with syrup in the middle) by the water and don’t forget to visit the Anne Frank house.
Beautiful Barcelona is one of the most vibrant destinations for a weekend away and the perfect place to make memories that will last a lifetime. From the quirky Gothic Quarter and the bars and boutiques of Las Ramblas to the world-class galleries and super-hotel bars, there really is something for everyone. The food scene in Barcelona is huge so after a day on your feet, let your hair down, put your best dress on and enjoy an evening of good food, local wine and have fun.
Be the envy of family and friends and pop to Nice for an absolutely fabulous weekend away. From sipping coffee in Cours Saleya to feeling the sun on your back as you walk along the Promenade des Anglais, a mini-break in Nice will make you feel totally chilled. Nestled between narrow lanes are a plethora of galleries, markets, delis and boutiques like no others in the world. Once you are done with walking, find a parasol to sit under and enjoy a cold glass of champagne and live like a celebrity as you watch the sun go down.
If you really want to push the boat out, how about a trip to the Big Apple? Swapping Sainsbury’s and the cinema for the sights and sounds of New York City has to be done at least once in your lifetime. Stroll through Central Park in the autumn sunshine, catch the ferry to Ellis Island, take selfies in Time Square and be sure to leave room in your bags for some shopping state style.
Next week we will be staying on home shores and looking at where you enjoy the magic if autumn leaves, don’t miss it.
