Your Guide to the Best Moisturising Ingredients

Photo by Jessica Felicio on Unsplash

Skincare is one of those things which can be entirely subjective – a product which one person swears by could be far less effective for someone else. This is usually down to the key ingredients in each product and how our skin reacts to those ingredients. With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some of the best ingredients for hydrating your skin, to help you to choose which might be best for your skins’ individual needs.

Hyaluronic Acid

Most people have heard of hyaluronic acid, but people continue to be surprised that it’s a moisturising ingredient (maybe because of the common perception of what an acid usually does?). When you apply a hyaluronic acid serum to your skin, it acts like a sponge by attracting moisture to boost hydration on the surface of skin. Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer is a 3-in-1 treatment which harnesses the power of hyaluronic acid to offer maximum hydrators to resurface, smooth and brighten the skin without causing irritation or redness.

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids that help form the skin’s barrier and help skin retain moisture, while also helping the skin protect against environmental aggressors like irritants, and pollution. Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum is packed with ceramides which mimic the natural fats found in our skin to help lock in moisture and stop skin from drying out.

Glycerin

Glycerin is actually a bit of a special ingredient as it actually traps moisture from the environment around you, allowing your skin to absorb it, giving you a softer, more supple complexion. It’s often used in hand creams or areas which need an extra boost, but is also found in Elemis Daily Defence Shield SPF30, which protects the skin from environmental micro particles and harmful UV rays, as well as leaving the skin feeling nourished, soft and supple.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a ‘best of both worlds’ ingredient in that it act a both a mild exfoliant, as well as an humectant. This means that it gets rid of dead, dry skin cells at the same time as locking moisture in. It can be found in Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum, which also exfoliates and reduces unbalanced pigmentation while nourishing the skin with moisture.

Urea

Urea might not sound like something you want to rub on your face, but it’s actually synthetic urea which features in skincare and it can be used to treat even the worst cases of dry skin, dermatitis and psoriasis. Urea works in part by loosening dry skin, and Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex is made to target the eye area by reducing wrinkles, crows feet and puffiness which occur due to dehydration.

Five Tips to Stop Your Under-Eye Area from Ageing You Prematurely

Royalty-free Image

Under-eye bags are something which can affect people of all ages, skin tones and skin types and can be dealt with using various products. However, when you’re prone to under eye bags AND the signs of ageing have started to appear, it can be trickier to deal with as the skin becomes paper. We’ve put together five tips to help stop your under eye area from making you look old before your time.

Don’t Over-Conceal

There are plenty of color correcting concealers which can help to mask the appearance of dark circles. However, once your skin starts to thin with age, adding heavy concealer to your under eye can drag the whole area down, making it look far worse. Opt for a mineral powder instead, which will give buildable coverage without the weight.

Use a Tightener

Using a product to tighten the skin under the eye will not only reduce the appearance of fine lines, but it will also help to minimise the size of your eye bags in the process. Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex will help with eye are concerns such as wrinkles, crows feet, puffiness, dark circles due to hyperpigmentation and skin sensitivity due to dehydration.

Get Cool

Using something cooling on the area under your eyes is a simple way to reduce both dark circles and puffiness. An old-fashioned method is to refrigerate two teaspoons and place them over the eyes – if you haven’t got time for this, we recommend Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist which quickly relieves inflammation and discomfort, helping skin recover from damage and lipid barrier breakdown.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Fine lines and wrinkles are usually massively exacerbated by dryness, so it stands to reason that adding moisture will help. Additionally, sweeping massage gestures from the inner corner of the eye to the outer is a good way to reduce accumulated fluid from the puffy under eye area, so applying Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex with self-massage will help with both issues.

Pack a Punch

Sometimes, you need to just reach for the most powerful product you can find to hit all of the issues at once and in this case, Dermalogica Stress Positive Eye Lift is the product you need. It’s a high-performance eye treatment and masque that energises skin to reduce visible signs of ageing, dark circles and puffiness, all in one powerful treatment.

There are loads of reasons for puffiness around your eye area – tiredness, illness, stress and allergies are just a few of them. Puffiness around your eyes can make you look exhausted and far from your best, so finding a way to deal with it is a must. Fortunately, here at Pure Beauty, we have a whole load of products which can help to banish the puffiness around your eye area, and these are five of our favourites:

Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex

This eye cream from Dermalogica is a real powerhouse of a product, tackling several different issues all at once. As well as dealing with puffiness, the complex also helps to remedy wrinkles, crow’s feet, dark circles due to hyperpigmentation and skin sensitivity due to dehydration. It’s ideal for drier skin or skin with is ageing prematurely and will totally revitalise the eye area.

Elemis Absolute Eye Serum

This eye serum from Elemis is all about the hydration, giving a wash of moisture around the eye area to decongest and tackle puffiness and dark circles. It conditions and nourishes the delicate eye contours, supports and tones the skin around the eyes and has a light texture that disappears immediately so that you can get on with applying your make up without having to wait for things to soak in.

Decleor Lift and Firm Eye Cream

As well as lifting and firming the area around the eyes, this cream from Decleor contains pearlescent particles which adds radiance to your skin. The peptides in the formula encourage circulation and re-energise the support fibres of your skin, which reduces puffiness and smooths wrinkles. It comes with a specially designed spatula to help you to apply the formula to the delicate eye area without causing ‘drag’, which can damage the delicate area.

Dermalogica UltraSmoothing Eye Serum

This eye serum comes from the Ultra Calming Dermalogica range, which means that it’s gentle on the skin and doesn’t contain any ingredients which might irritate the already-delicate eye area. It’s a potent but lightweight product which soaks evenly and quickly into the skin and gives immediate tightening and firming results. It’s perfect for those who suffer with sensitive skin but are trying to deal with the signs of premature ageing.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Eye Renewal

Elemis Pro-collagen products are notorious for their stunning effects and this eye renewal cream is no exception. It firms the area around the eyes, adding moisture and nourishment to the skin and obliterates dark circles and fine lines. It dramatically increases cell renewal and bears the Elemis Promise, so you can be sure that it doesn’t contain any sodium laureth sulphate or other nasties.

Here at Pure Beauty, we love this time of year. The UK weather is starting to get better, the clocks have gone forward so days are longer and we’re all thinking about getting away to a sunny beach in the coming months. If you want to maximise your tanning power while you’re away, we’ve got some great products which can help you to do this:

Dermalogica Exfoliating Body Scrub

One of the best ways to ensure a deep, even tan is to regularly exfoliate before you go on holiday. This way, all of the dead, dulling upper skin cells will be buffed away, revealing the newer skin beneath, which will pick up a tan a lot more easily. This scrub from Dermalogica is suitable for all skin types and will leave your skin feeling smooth and polished.

Elemis Tan Accelerator

Giving your skin a helping hand with this tan accelerator from Elemis is a great way to ensure maximum tanning. It stimulates the natural melanin production within the skin, which optimises your natural tanning ability. You’ll need to wear a higher SPF for the first few days because your skin will be more sensitive to the skin, but you can expect to be suitably golden by the time you leave.

Decleor Face Tan Activator Serum

Many tanning products for the body are unsuitable for use on the face, which is why Decleor offers a dedicated serum to help to increase the tan on your face. The serum itself is 100% natural and will prepare the delicate facial skin for exposure to the sun, giving protection and a boost to the tanning ability.

Elemis Total Glow Bronzing Body Lotion

If you want a bit of a base colour before you hit the beach or poolside, using a gradual tanner in the days running up to your holiday will really help. It’s not like a regular fake tan so the colour will build gradually and won’t leave you streaky or orange! The formula contains green tea and red algae extracts to ensure deep hydration for your skin, and has a special ingredient called Aromaguard™ which banishes that annoying, distinctive ‘fake tan’ smell with a delicate floral aroma.

Elemis Liquid Layer SPF30

People often make the mistake of thinking that using an SPF will limit your ability to tan and neglect to protect their skin. However, using a sun cream will still allow you to tan, but will protect you against the harmful rays which cause ageing and burning. This facial SPF from Elemis is water-resistant and moisturises the skin whilst protecting you from sun damage.

How to Apply the Perfect Smoky Eye

Make up trends come and go on what seems like an almost daily basis, but if there’s one make-up look which is always in style, it’s the smoky eye. Achievable in a number of different tones with each more effective than the last, the killer smoky eye is easy to achieve providing you follow the right steps:

  • Make sure your face is super clean first so that you’ve got the best canvas on which to work. Opt for an all-round cleanser such as Decleor Hydra-Radiance Smoothing and Cleansing Mousse, which is suitable for all skin types.
  • Use a good eye cream which will help you to reduce the appearance of fine lines around the area. Nothing ruins a smoky eye quicker than all of your eye shadow disappearing under loose skin!
  • Apply a primer to your face, which will blur imperfections and smooth out your skin, making it far easier to apply an even layer of colour.
  • Use the right brushes. The applicators which are given away with most eye shadows are actually really rubbish for blending, so invest in a good set of brushes before you take the plunge.
  • Choose a shade which suits you – olive and darker skins look fantastic with a bronze-based gradient, while lighter skinned women look great with greys and blacks. If you’re feeling really brave, you could even opt for other hues, such as purple or a shimmery emerald which are both huge right now.
  • Use a cotton bud dipped into a little concealer to get rid of any mistakes or smudges, otherwise you’ll end up rubbing everything off and starting again!
  • If you use eyeliner – a harsh line of black on your lid will stand out a mile, whereas a well-blended line of kohl will make your eyes pop.
  • Use concealer (or dab some Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF30) under your eyes to ensure you don’t have dark bags, which could potentially ruin your whole look.
  • BLEND, BLEND, BLEND! The key to a smoky eye is that the colours are seamlessly blended together to create the whole look – fail to do so and ‘smoky’ becomes ‘stripey’!
