hair mythsHair is one of those things about which everyone has an opinion, anecdote or nugget of advice, but as scientific knowledge advances, often these ‘old wives tales’ turn out to be nothing but baseless claims passed down through the grapevine. We take a look at five of these rumours which are, in fact, totally inaccurate to show you just how many untruths there are out there.

Cutting Hair Makes it Thicker

This myth is possibly the one which gets trotted out the most but it’s more or less impossible to affect the actual thickness of your hair because it’s dictated by the size of your hair follicles. If your hair is broken and wispy, cutting off the broken ends will make it look thicker, but it’s basically an optical illusion.

Dry Shampoo is Good for Your Hair

Dry shampoo is actually a really old fashioned product which has made a resurgence in recent years, but using it regularly is far from a good idea. In fact, there’s evidence to show that overuse of dry shampoo can actually damage the hair and scalp and even leave you with bald patches – AVOID!

You Can’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

This is one of those pieces of advice which is totally subjective. Sure, some people may feel that washing every day dries out their hair and scalp, but other people produce a LOT more sebum and would look like they’d stuck their head in a vat of oil if they didn’t wash every day. Our advice is to wash your hair as often as you feel necessary with Dermalogica Shine Therapy Shampoo, followed by Dermalogica Silk Finish Conditioner.

Brushing Hair Makes it Stronger

Do you remember being made to do 100 strokes of the hairbrush before bed when you were little? Yeah, you were pretty much wasting your time. Brushing regularly will help to distribute the natural oils from your scalp through the rest of your hair, which can help to protect and hydrate your hair, but brushing too often (or with the wrong brush) can actually weaken and damage hair in the long run.

You NEED To Cut Your Hair Every Six Weeks

Again, this is very subjective and probably something which has been made up by a hairdresser hoping to increase their business! Cut your hair every six to eight weeks if you feel you NEED to, but doing so is certainly not essential, nor will it help to actually improve the quality of your hair, only the current appearance of it.

Daring Summer LooksSummer is a time when it’s great to be daring or try something to shake your image up a bit. Here at Pure Beauty we love experimenting with our hair, make up and clothing so we thought we’d share with you a few of our summer shake up ideas to help you to be a bit more adventurous.

Colourful Dip Dye

Brightly coloured hair is totally on-trend right now, but if you aren’t brave enough for a full-on mermaid look, you could try a colourful dip dye. This has many benefits; less time and effort, lower maintenance and best of all, if you don’t like it, you can simply trim off the bottom few inches of your hair. Coloured dye usually only lasts for a few washes too, so you can change it up when you feel like it, but use Dermalogica Silk Finish Conditioner to keep hair in good condition.

Get The Chop!

Both Versace and Yves Saint Laurent had models with buzz cuts walking for them this season and going super short is rumoured to be the BIG look for winter. Obviously, it’s an incredibly bold look and a huge step if you’ve always had flowing locks, but going short might be something you’ll absolutely love…just make sure you give it a lot of thought first!

Crazy Colours

If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably been sticking to roughly the same shades in your make up bag for years now and are likely to be quite adamant about what suits you and what doesn’t. However, thinking outside the box in terms of your colour palatte could really help to liven up your look. Experiment with red lips, dark lips, smokey eyes…basically anything you’ve not tried before and you might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Minimal Make Up

During the winter, we tend to feel more comfortable with a full coverage foundation because there are so many things which play havoc with our complexion. In summer, however, we prefer less coverage because it simply feels uncomfortable in the heat, so opting for a BB cream is a great alternative. BB creams offer sheer coverage, moisturistation, and leave you looking radiant without the need for layers.

Fringe Benefits

If you aren’t quite brave enough for super bright hair or a crazy buzz cut,why not try having a fringe cut in? Fringes can really change the whole look of your face and whether you go for a sweeping side fringe, a bold block fringe or an on-trend short fringe, you’re sure to make a statement with it.

How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker

Unless you’re one of those people who are blessed with naturally thick hair, there’s probably been times when you wished your hair looked thicker. Obviously there are a few old wives’ tales about how to improve the thickeness of your hair (just FYI, having it cut doesn’t actually make a difference…) but there are ways to improve the appearance of your hair to create the illusion of thickness and we thought we’d take a look at a few of them.

Keep it Clean

Keeping your hair super clean will really help to improve the look of your hair, as hair which is weighed down with sebum and pollution will automatically look lank and much thinner than it is. We suggest a shampoo like Dermalogica Shine Therapy Shampoo, which will clarify the hair and wash away excess oil, leaving your hair looking thicker and bouncier.

Don’t Weight it Down

Using conditioner is essential for keeping hair in tip-top condition, but using the wrong one can weigh the hair down, leaving it looking flat and thin. Using Dermalogica Silk Finish Conditioner will allow you to add moisture back to your hair without weighing it down and will leave your hair soft and in great condition.

Keep it Trimmed

Although getting your hair cut won’t actually make it thicker (you have a limited amount of hair-growing follicles on your head and not much will ever change that), getting your hair cut can make it appear thicker. Over time, hair ends spilt and wear away, leaving the bottoms if your hair looking slightly ratty. Getting it trimmed (to shoulder length for optimum results) will make is LOOK thicker and is a great excuse for a bit of pampering.

Tease it

Back-combing may seem like something confined to the “things your Mum used to do” box, but using a fine-toothed comb to tease your roots will add lift and volume, giving you an appearance of thickness without the need for products or any other sort of witchcraft!

Get Highlights

Hair which is all one colour can lack body and movement because it doesn’t have any textire or definition. Having some highlights, even if they’re only one shade lighter than your natural hair colour will add volume and body to your hair and will make it look nicely thick.

Go back a couple of decades and “proms” were something that most people only heard about through American TV shows and films, but fast forward to 2016 and proms are big news here in the UK. The end-of-year ritual has become a tradition with kids in either year 11, once they’re done with their G.C.S.E’s or sixth form leavers once they’re ready for Uni or the big working world, and it’s becoming an expensive business.

Kids are expecting snazzy outfits, hair and make-up, professionally done nails and even limos to arrive and leave in. We thought we’d take a look at some stunning hairstyles for girls which are actually really easy and can be done at home, so you can save some money on the big day! Don’t forget to prep the hair by washing with Dermalogica Shine Therapy Shampoo and finish with Dermalogica Silk Finish Conditioner for great results.

Statement Pony

Statement Pony

It’s good to remember that you’re young enough to get away with fun hairstyles and at 16 (or even 18) something age-appropriate can look so much cuter than straight up Hollywood glamour. This statement pony works on hair of almost all textures and is SO easy to do. It actually works better on hair which hasn’t been washed for a day or two and can be achieved with little more than a brush, a couple of elastics and a can of hairspray.

Side Twists

rolled updo

Another super simple look is this updo which simply twists the hair away from the face and needs to be secured with bobby pins. Don’t twist too tightly as it will look quite severe and stuck to your head, so make sure you keep the twists semi-loose and gather in any stray hairs as you go.

Curly Bun

curly bun

This style works really well if you have curly or afro hair – it’s a simple bun but instead of scraping the hair back so it’s flat against your head, the texture of your hair is allowed to shine through, giving a relaxed but pretty look. Apply a curling cream or serum to your hair, allow it to dry naturally and then use a statement hair accessory which matches or accents your dress to make this simple hairstyle really work.

Sleek Pony

Sleek Pony

By contrast, a super-sleek ponytail can look totally glam when paired with a beautiful gown but it takes a little work to get things really smooth. Use a smoothing serum on your hair while it’s wet and then once you’ve dried your hair, straighten it with straightening irons. Use a paddle brush to sweep the hair back, and secure with a hair-band, then wrap a section of your hair around the brush for a sophisticated look. Finish with a good spray of hairspray to keep everything in place.

Loose Bun

Loose Bun

This is probably the easiest hair-do on the list to do as it literally just involves some back-combing, sweeping back with a hair-band and some bobby pins, and can even be done on unwashed hair. However, the final look is all in the accessories and this is a great hair style if you’re wearing a tiara and want to make the top of your head ALL about your bling!
