How to Combat Dry Hair

Dry hair can be a real pain, especially at this time of year. The constant change of temperatures, from the cold outside to centrally heated houses combined with the need to use heat to dry our hair every time we wash it can leave our follicles feeling frazzled. Today, we’re looking at five ways to help you to combat dry hair and get your locks back to their luscious full potential.

Get a Trim

This is the eternal obvious answer to dealing with dry hair. Although it’s a myth that getting your haircut will magically make it look thicker and healthier, the driest part of your hair is ALWAYS the ends, so getting these trimmed will naturally improve the overall appearance of your hair.

Replenish Lost Moisture

Dry oils, such as Decleor Satin Softening Dry Oil are a great way to add moisture back into your hair without making it look greasy. Because this is a dry oil, you can apply it to your hair and you won’t look like you’ve dipped your head in a deep fat fryer!

Turn the Shower Down

Just like with your skin, hot water will strip your hair of essential natural oils, so blasting your shower at super hot temperatures isn’t doing you any favours. It might make you feel cleaner, but your hair and skin will both thank you if you turn the temperature down, even if it’s just a little bit.

Cut Down on Heat Styling

Another no-brainer, but we all know how heat styling can cause damage over time, so if your hair is super dry and you’re using blow dryers, straightening irons or curling wands on a daily basis, cutting back is a good idea. If you don’t like leaving your hair to air dry, try wrapping it in a towel or cloth for as long as possible after washing as this is absorb moisture and reduce hair drying time

Conditioning is Key

Dry hair can not only feel very dry, but also fine and flyaway thanks to the lack of moisture, so a conditioning treatment containing essential oils is really important. Use Dermalogica Daily Conditioning Rinse every time you wash your hair (even if it’s not daily!) as this is formulated to restore softness and shine for vibrantly-healthy hair every day.

Hair Loss – What’s Causing it and How to Prevent It

Hair loss is something that women rarely discuss and the taboo surrounding female hair loss can stop us from seeking proper help when it does happen. We’ve all heard of Male Pattern Baldness, but did you know there’s also Female Pattern Baldness? There are many things which can contribute to female baldness and hair thinning and we’ve put together a list of the main culprits:

Hormones

A woman’s hormones are a delicate balance which keep everything running smoothly, but when things get messed up it can have a lot of knock on effects, and hair loss is one of them. Pregnancy, menopause and even conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome can cause hair loss. If you think a hormone imbalance might be contributing to your hair loss, ask your GP to perform a simple blood test to take a look at your levels.

Vitamin Deficiencies

There are a number of vitamins which can affect hair growth and if you’re lacking iron, vitamin B12 or vitamin A, you might have problems with hair loss. Try to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veg and proteins, and take a multivitamin supplement to bolster your system.

Weight Loss

Losing too much weight too quickly can have a dramatic effect on your hair and it’s not unknown for a sudden drop in your weight to cause temporary baldness. If you’re planning to lose weight, try to do so healthily over a decent period of time rather than crash dieting as this can send your body into shock.

Too Much Heat Styling

We all know that heat styling can break your hair, but too much of it over time can weaken and damage hair follicles, destroying their ability to grown new hairs and this can equate to bald patches. If you must style your hair with heat, use a good conditioner, try not to pull too hard on the shaft of the hair and try not to let the heat styling implement get too close to the roots of your hair.

Stress

One of the single most common causes of hair loss is stress and the only way to halt the effects is to reduce the amount of stress in your life. Take a look at what the main sources of stress are in your life and ask a friend or partner to help you change them. Taking some time for yourself to de-stress is a good idea, so treat yourself to some Elemis Quiet Mind Temple Balm for rubbing on your temples when you feel overwhelmed.

Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash

Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash

Back in 2009, we had the unfortunate task of telling our customers that we were no longer able to sell Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash on our site, due to Dermalogica deciding that it should only be sold through skincare practitioners who were able to give a personalised recommendation based on a consultation with a client. We respected Dermalogica’s decision and completely understood their need for caution, however we’re delighted to say that after a recent policy review, Dermalogica has decided that it CAN be sold online again, providing a proper warning is given. So, here’s everything you need to know about Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash!

What Does it Do?

Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash is a potent cleanser which can be used on skin which is prone to blackheads, breakouts and oiliness. It clears pores of impurities and dead skin cells, clears clogged follicles, and helps to prevent future breakouts. It also contains anti-bacterial ingredients which help to kill the germs which cause spots and skin problems.

What’s in it?

Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash contains some really potent ingredients, hence the warnings! Salicylic acid takes care of sloughing away the top layer of dead skin cells and dirt, while balm mint, eucalyptus and tea tree take care of the anti-bacterial side of things. Soothing camphor will soothe the skin, helping to eliminate areas of redness and reducing inflammation.

How Do I Use it?

Perform the Dermalogica Double Cleanse that begins with Dermalogica PreCleanse.

  1. Pour a small amount of Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash onto dampened hands.

  2. Apply to wet face and throat, activating with fingertips in light, upward strokes and concentrating on any areas of congestion. Avoid eye area.

  3. Rinse thoroughly with tepid water. The Dermalogica Sponge Cloth can be used (dampened).

  4. Repeat for professional results.

What Do I Need to Remember?

If skin experiences sensitivity or dehydration from daily use, reduce use to 2-3 times per week. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Use as directed. For external use only. Keep out of eyes.

Five Hair Myths BUSTED

hair mythsHair is one of those things about which everyone has an opinion, anecdote or nugget of advice, but as scientific knowledge advances, often these ‘old wives tales’ turn out to be nothing but baseless claims passed down through the grapevine. We take a look at five of these rumours which are, in fact, totally inaccurate to show you just how many untruths there are out there.

Cutting Hair Makes it Thicker

This myth is possibly the one which gets trotted out the most but it’s more or less impossible to affect the actual thickness of your hair because it’s dictated by the size of your hair follicles. If your hair is broken and wispy, cutting off the broken ends will make it look thicker, but it’s basically an optical illusion.

Dry Shampoo is Good for Your Hair

Dry shampoo is actually a really old fashioned product which has made a resurgence in recent years, but using it regularly is far from a good idea. In fact, there’s evidence to show that overuse of dry shampoo can actually damage the hair and scalp and even leave you with bald patches – AVOID!

You Can’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

This is one of those pieces of advice which is totally subjective. Sure, some people may feel that washing every day dries out their hair and scalp, but other people produce a LOT more sebum and would look like they’d stuck their head in a vat of oil if they didn’t wash every day. Our advice is to wash your hair as often as you feel necessary with Dermalogica Shine Therapy Shampoo, followed by Dermalogica Silk Finish Conditioner.

Brushing Hair Makes it Stronger

Do you remember being made to do 100 strokes of the hairbrush before bed when you were little? Yeah, you were pretty much wasting your time. Brushing regularly will help to distribute the natural oils from your scalp through the rest of your hair, which can help to protect and hydrate your hair, but brushing too often (or with the wrong brush) can actually weaken and damage hair in the long run.

You NEED To Cut Your Hair Every Six Weeks

Again, this is very subjective and probably something which has been made up by a hairdresser hoping to increase their business! Cut your hair every six to eight weeks if you feel you NEED to, but doing so is certainly not essential, nor will it help to actually improve the quality of your hair, only the current appearance of it.

How to Make Your Hair Look Thicker

Unless you’re one of those people who are blessed with naturally thick hair, there’s probably been times when you wished your hair looked thicker. Obviously there are a few old wives’ tales about how to improve the thickeness of your hair (just FYI, having it cut doesn’t actually make a difference…) but there are ways to improve the appearance of your hair to create the illusion of thickness and we thought we’d take a look at a few of them.

Keep it Clean

Keeping your hair super clean will really help to improve the look of your hair, as hair which is weighed down with sebum and pollution will automatically look lank and much thinner than it is. We suggest a shampoo like Dermalogica Shine Therapy Shampoo, which will clarify the hair and wash away excess oil, leaving your hair looking thicker and bouncier.

Don’t Weight it Down

Using conditioner is essential for keeping hair in tip-top condition, but using the wrong one can weigh the hair down, leaving it looking flat and thin. Using Dermalogica Silk Finish Conditioner will allow you to add moisture back to your hair without weighing it down and will leave your hair soft and in great condition.

Keep it Trimmed

Although getting your hair cut won’t actually make it thicker (you have a limited amount of hair-growing follicles on your head and not much will ever change that), getting your hair cut can make it appear thicker. Over time, hair ends spilt and wear away, leaving the bottoms if your hair looking slightly ratty. Getting it trimmed (to shoulder length for optimum results) will make is LOOK thicker and is a great excuse for a bit of pampering.

Tease it

Back-combing may seem like something confined to the “things your Mum used to do” box, but using a fine-toothed comb to tease your roots will add lift and volume, giving you an appearance of thickness without the need for products or any other sort of witchcraft!

Get Highlights

Hair which is all one colour can lack body and movement because it doesn’t have any textire or definition. Having some highlights, even if they’re only one shade lighter than your natural hair colour will add volume and body to your hair and will make it look nicely thick.
