www.pexels.comWe all set out to be the best we can at the start of the new year.

While no one keeps to every resolution, sometimes a good book and a little cheerleading can help you get off on the right foot, and stay balanced as well as motivated to change.

We have done a round-up of what we think are the best books out there, and hope one or two will spark a little joy (no, we haven’t added ‘that one’).

Denise Duffield-Thomas is a fantastic money mindset coach, but it’s her humour and down-to-earth wisdom that sets her apart from other gurus. While she has three books out there, in Chillpreneur she shares brilliant business advice and millionaire mindset lessons that help you become a success, the chilled way. Yes, you have to do the hard work, but this is perfect for anyone who wants to be a success but likes to have a little balance and downtime as well.

Unless you have been hiding out at home, you will know about Marie Forleo, and now you can learn that Everything is Figureoutable in her New York Times bestseller. By the end of the book you will be able to deal with criticism and imposter syndrome, bouncing back from hard times will seem possible, and you can start to see how you can overcome a lack of time and money. You might not become perfect, but you will make progress.

If you are time poor but really want to make changes in your life this year, then Dr Chatterjee‘s third book is for you. Feel Better In 5 is a daily plan that helps you get the life you want, in only five minutes of your day. Easy to read, easy to do and with real life case studies and fun exercises, this can help get your mind, body and soul in shape and in less time than it takes to make a cup of tea – peppermint of course.

Be Happy, Be You, says it is for teenagers, but this great little book can help pretty much anyone out there who needs a little bit of a boost. Penny Alexandra and Becky Goddard-Hill have created a dip in, dip out book that helps kids and young adults deal with anxiety and generally live a better life, the fun way. Get a pen and journal and this could be the start of something new and exciting.

Last but not least, 2020 is the time to learn to love you. Insta guru Vex King has overcome adversity and uses his personal experiences to inspire others. If you want to transform negative emotions into positive ones and find lasting happiness, then his book, Good Vibes, Good Lives is for you. It’s not that long but by the time you are done, you will start to look at the world, and your world, in a new way.

As always, try your local indie bookshop or library and get books there rather than online, and this will help you feel good, too.

www.pexels.com
Life can be overwhelming in the 21st century and living in a world of perfect, filtered Instagram images it can be easy to compare ourselves to others even though this knocks our self-esteem and dents our confidence.

We have had a look at how to feel happier with your lot, however shiny everyone else’s lives might look.

Keep a journal
Yes, it might seem a little old school to write things down on paper but keeping a journal helps you get a better perspective on things and can make life look a little less scary. Buy a pretty notebook and make time at the end of each day to just write. There are no rules when it comes to journalling so just write and let the pages soak up your stress and you will see the sunny side of life again.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the buzzword of the moment and is quite simply a form of meditation that bring things into the present, and can be beneficial to your mind, body and soul. Sit quietly for ten minutes a day and move the focus of your attention away from the world, away from the past, away from the future and just focus on now. Doing this will help you relax and be at peace with your thoughts and while it can take time to really get into meditation, it is time well spent as it will be worth it in the long run.

Be number one
This might sound selfish, especially if you have a family, but putting yourself first is key to being happy and feeling more in control of your life. It can be hard to say no sometimes, but saying it will give you the time you need to look after number one and in the long run it will boost your energy levels and self-esteem.

Keep alcohol down
When times are hard and the pressure is on, it is really tempting to have a drink, or two. While it might take away some of those feelings of overwhelm in the short-term, it can make you feel angry and aggressive and leave you feeling down, depressed and hungover. Keep a check on how much you drink each week and if you feel like the odd glass of wine is becoming a more regular occurrence, look at what is going on and what you could do instead of heading for the bottle.

Move
As well as keeping you healthy and getting blood and oxygen pumping around your body, moderate exercise will release the feel good chemicals in your brain that make you happy. Find an activity you really enjoy, so it is fun not a chore, and you will find that you will start to feel brighter and lighter and as well as having more energy in the day, you will sleep better at night.

Talk about it
The old saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved, and that is so true. Holding onto worries and concerns can really get you down, so chat things over with your partner or a friend and feel the weight lift off your shoulders.

Of course, if things do feel too much, speak to your GP and see if they can help put a support system in place to make life easier once again.

www.pexels.com

We know that a start of a new year can be a time when many of us make endless resolutions so we can be the very best we can.

The thing is, January is cold and dark and even with the best will in the world, getting out of bed in the dark and running 10 miles to be super fit, can be, well, miserable.

So we have come up with a list of 50 really easy things you can do to make yourself happy in 2017 and to be honest, that’s what really matters.

  1. Smile.
  2. Write down three good things for each day in a journal – even on the hardest of days there is something good.
  3. Plan something fun to do each weekend.
  4. Don’t gossip.
  5. Say hello to your neighbours.
  6. Listen to your favourite song, everyday.
  7. Have a bath before you go to bed.
  8. Call your mum, sister, aunt, husband once in a while rather than just texting.
  9. Eat clean, or at least eat healthy.
  10. Go for a walk at lunchtime.
  11. Read a book.
  12. Donate to charity and give back.
  13. Really listen when someone is talking to do.
  14. Skip the news.
  15. Make a cake and eat it fresh from the over.
  16. Light candles.
  17. Get a dog.
  18. Take up a new sport.
  19. Don’t have the argument.
  20. Clear out the clutter.
  21. Send birthday cards don’t just post a message on Facebook.
  22. Drink hot water and lemon when you wake up.
  23. Don’t pop that spot on your chin, it’ll make it red and sore.
  24. Become a volunteer for a local cause close to your heart.
  25. Get on your bike and peddle your way to fitness.
  26. Have a manicure and feel polished.
  27. Turn the TV off and do something less boring instead.
  28. Start a blog.
  29. Wear a new lipstick.
  30. Don’t keep anything for best, life is short, live it.
  31. Go out in the sunshine and up your Vitamin D levels the next way.
  32. Tell someone you love them.
  33. Make use of your local library.
  34. Don’t gossip.
  35. Get a blender and make your own smoothies full of goodness and health benefits.
  36. Sign up for a challenge and stick to it.
  37. Meditate everyday, you will feel the benefits and it will become a part of your routine.
  38. Book a spa day for you and a friend and really relax as you catch up.
  39. Update your CV and get the job you have always really wanted.
  40. Ask your man to marry you – it isn’t a leap year but take control and get a date in the diary.
  41. Host a party and let your hair down.
  42. Apply to be on a talent show.
  43. Go on a digital detox and leave the world of social media behind, even for a few hours.
  44. Book a holiday and have something amazing to look forward to.
  45. Have a make over and only wear the clothes you love and the ones that make you feel great.
  46. Pay off that credit card bill.
  47. Write a letter.
  48. Buy lunch for someone who is sleeping rough.
  49. Go to the cinema in the middle of the day.
  50. Smile, did we say that already?

You see, all easy to do and all with great potential for making you happy.

Happy 2017.

Six stress busting tips

Lyndelle Palmer Clarke is a personal growth expert and author of the Dailygreatness Journal range. A recovering self-help junkie who’d read all the books, been to all the seminars, listened to all the DVD’s and followed all the gurus she realised (after hitting a major crisis in her life) that she wasn’t moving forwards because of the lack of applied knowledge.

Lyndelle has now made it her life mission to empower others to apply all those self-help ideas into your life in a fun, practical and dynamic way so you can start seeing results.

http://www.freedigitalphotos.net

Today she has six great steps to help you beat the stress in your life so can be happier and more fulfilled than ever before.

Acknowledge your triggers: Awareness is the first step to change. You need first to know what triggers stress for you before you can take steps to change it. Acknowledging those triggers is how you begin to manage and overcome stress, so it doesn’t end up overwhelming you. If caffeine is a stress trigger, then limit your coffees to one a day or less. If certain people trigger stress in you, limit your exposure to them. If certain situations cause you to feel stressed, you have two choices. Either learn to face those situations, so they don’t overwhelm you or limit your exposure to them.

Follow the source: Sometimes it’s not obvious where your stress is coming from. It could be an outside situation that is obvious or a subtle recurring thought pattern that creates your stress. Either way, you need to get to the source so you can proactively work to remove the stress point and find peace.

Remember to breathe: It might seem simple but when was the last time you actually stopped and took a big deep conscious breath? Sometimes that’s all it takes to reduce stress and instantly feel better.

Journal: Journalling brings the unconscious into the conscious, and unconscious thinking patterns are very often the cause of stress. By putting those thoughts on paper, you can begin to reveal the source of your stress and finally empower yourself to let go of whatever is holding you in that stress pattern. Try the Dailygreatness Journal: A Practical Guide for Consciously Creating Your Days which can help you master your mind-set and reach your potential.

Take a day off: Sometimes all we need is to relax, re-set and rejuvenate. Taking a day off to do nothing but rest can be all it takes to feel unburdened, energised and inspired again. It takes emotional intelligence to recognise when we need to rest, and it is the smartest thing you can do for yourself and those around you.

Build a foundation: Stress is usually not an overnight occurrence. It builds up over time due to not taking care of ourselves. Stress strikes when we don’t have a good foundation in place. My simple stress relieving check list includes daily exercise, drinking enough water, yoga or meditation, a good night sleep, a healthy diet and a positive mind-set.
