Protect Your Lashes from Bad Habits

Royalty-free Image

Whether you’re a falsies girl, you have semi-permanent lashes, or you prefer to go all natural, lashes are really important to framing your face and finishing a look. However, many women still have bad habits which cause them to lose lashes and stunt growth, so we thought we’d take a look at some of the bad habits that many women have, so that you can protect your lashes in the future:

Using Harsh Cleansers

We all know that taking your make-up off before bed is important, but using harsh cleansers which aren’t designed for use around your eyes can cause your lashes to fall out in much greater numbers than usual. Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make Up Remover is designed to gently remove all traces of make-up and contains silk amino acids to help strengthen lashes and condition the delicate eye lid area.

Using Old Mascara

We know that it can be annoying to replace make-up every few months, especially if you’ve bought a high-end brand or still have loads left in the tube, but using old mascara can leave you prone to lash-loss and eye infections. Infections can damage hair follicles and could permanently affect your eyelash growth.

Too Much DIY

If you have eyelash extensions, proper care should mean than your natural lashes aren’t affected. However, pulling them out yourself instead of getting them professionally removed can pull your lashes out and damage the lids, leaving you prone to scarring and infection. Always allow a qualified technician to do your removal.

Neglecting Your Eye Area

Your eye area is delicate and needs regular care to stay in the best condition possible. Even if you don’t feel that you need an eye cream for anti-ageing purposes, using one to keep the whole eye area in good condition is essential for healthy lash growth. Dermalogica Total Eye Care SPF15 is ideal and will protect you from UV rays, too.

Rubbing Your Eyes Too Much

It’s the end of a long day, you’ve removed your make-up and you feel like rubbing your tired eyes. STOP! Rubbing your eyes can prematurely loosen lashes at their roots and can make lashes fall out way before their time. Try to keep your hands away from your eyes to protect your lashes.

Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner

Don’t worry, we aren’t suggesting you head out for your Christmas parties or New Year’s Eve drinks make up free, but we are advising you to take that make up off before you go to bed.

While many people think ‘just once’ won’t hurt, at Pure Beauty we are firm believers that the happiest, healthiest skin is skin that is cleansed, toned and moisturised before you go to sleep and when you wake up.

We have had a look at some products that are tough on cleaning away foundation, mascara and eye make-up, but are gentle and loving to your skin at the same time.

Soap free, packed with goodness and suitable for all skin types, is what the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is all about. Balm Mint soothes complexions, as natural Quillaja Saponaria foams away the make up and toxins that can cause problems. With Lavender Extract added into the mix, this is one product we think you will love from the moment you first use it.

If you want to cleanse your skin, remove dead cells and stimulate the cellular renewal process, you need the Decleor Phytopeel Smooth Exfoliating Cream. Perfect for this time of year when we often wear more make-up then usual and have lots of late nights, this soft cream formula is one of the gentlest, most natural ways to renew your skin before you sleep.

If you are tired and have had a long day, the temptation is to skip your toner, but we would urge you to reconsider and think about trying the Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner. Extracts of Apricot, Sweet Betty Flower and Quillaja Wood have been blended to create a toner which helps to soothe and harmonise the skin. Free from alcohol and harsh detergents, this toner can applied to the skin with cotton pads and not only does it help maintain natural pH levels but using this can assist the penetration of day and night creams so they are as effective as possible.

Oily skin can really suffer over the festive period, so treat it with the Jan Marini Bioglycolic Oily Skin Cleansing Gel. This deep follicular cleanser leaves oily and problem prone skin feeling super clean and soft from the very first use. While it cannot be used as an eye make-up remover, ongoing use morning and night, helps skin appear less oily, and leaves it with a smoother, more refined texture.

We always suggest adding an eye cream to your routine, especially at night-time when your skin works hard to rejuvenate itself. The Elemis Pro-Collagen Advanced Eye Treatment targets the fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area, leaving you with a more youthful appearance. Padina Pavonica and Blue Flower Linseed have been blended to help tone and firm, while an Amino Acid complex locks moisture into the skin but doesn’t overload it so it looks silky smooth rather than puffy.

If you have any questions, please do get in touch and we would love to help you make the right choice for your skin.

Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil

After a long day at work, office drinks and having to stand up on the train all the way home, taking your make up off before jumping into bed might be the last thing you want to do. We get it, but we also know that leaving foundation, mascara and highlighter on as you sleep, can play havoc with your skin, so those extra few minutes in the bathroom before you hit the sack, are totally worth it.

At Pure Beauty we think we have got this covered, and have something that will be right for everyone, whatever their age and however hard they like to party.

While getting that smoky eye perfect can take ages, taking it away is super easy with the Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make Up Remover. This efficient, clean-rinsing formula dissolves all traces of eye make-up including stubborn mascara, as well as heavy lip liner too. Oil and alcohol-free, as well as water-soluble, this conditioning gel not only cleans but thanks to Silk Amino Acids it helps to strengthen eye lashes and condition the delicate lid area at the same time. Simple to use, this gentle formula won’t cause irritation or stinging, which makes it perfect for all skin types and ideal for contact lens wearers – just remember to take those babies out before nodding off!

Teenagers love make-up and sleep, so they might want to try the Dermalogica Foaming Wash if they want to keep their skin blemish free. Orange Peel and Tea Tree Oil energises and refreshes skin, while Salicylic Acid deals with dead cells and trapped oil so that breakouts are tackled and kept under control. Gentle but effective, this face wash can be used morning and evening and is the perfect introduction to a great skin care routine for life.

If you like make-up with staying power, the Elemis Nourishing Omega-Rich Cleansing Oil could be good for you. Brilliant for removing waterproof make-up, and ideal for oily skin, this popular cleanser not only soothes and softens your skin but it lifts impurities away at the same time.

Want to try something new, then how about the Decleor Bi-phase Caring Cleanser and Makeup Remover? Powered by a scientific blend of Virgin Botanical Oils and Floral Water, not only does this product cleanse and nourish your skin, but it takes away all traces of make-up too. Decleor have create a revolutionary formula which softens, plumps and soothes skin which together boosts radiance, so add it to your basket and put it to the test.

For clean, smooth, refined skin you don’t need surgery, what you need is the Jan Marini Bioglycolic Facial Cleanser. We love this gentle, soap-free cleanser because not only does it wash away the day, but it leaves your skin feeling amazingly hydrated thanks to sorbitol, a natural humectant derived from berries. The non-irritating formula easily rinses away, and works well with the brand’s Bioglycolic Bioclear Cream which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scarring, large pores and uneven texture.

If you would like more information about any of these products, or are interested in trying some samples before making a decision, get in touch today and we would love to help you get things right.

We use our make-up bags every day, often more than once, but how often do you clean it and clear it out?

Made you think, didn’t we?

The reality is, life is busy, time is short and with a G&T with your name on it at the bar, you don’t want to spend your time sorting out old mascaras, but you need to.

Today we are looking at just how long you should keep your beauty staples, before throwing them in the bin and replacing them with something shiny and new.

First things first, take everything out of your bag, clean and dry it and if it has seen better days, buy a new one. This is also the perfect time to wash your brushes. Baby shampoo is brilliant for natural hair brushes and a gentle liquid soap does the job for the synthetic ones. Brushes really can be a breeding ground for germs, so wash them once a week to be safe. Rather than storing them in the bottom of your bag, keep brushes tip up in pot and allow them to dry naturally.

Next, sort out the products in front of you and anything that you haven’t used for a while, that is past its best or has had the top left off, should be replaced. It is also worth noting, if you’ve had an eye infection it’s a good idea to throw out make-up that could cause a re-infection. Oh, and if you want your stuff to last, don’t store it in the bathroom but somewhere cool, dark and dry.

The shelf life for foundation changes depending on the formula, but generally cream-based foundations last between six months to a year, and if there’s an SPF it tends to be less. Always pay attention to how your foundation looks and feels on your skin and if you notice that is starts to change colour or smell, it is time to ditch it. Also remember, as we head towards winter, you might want to swap your lighter sheer foundation for a stronger base but go for a product with light reflecting particles.

Ideally a mascara is good to go for around four months. After this time, they tend to become dry and prone to clumping, and using the same brush over and over can increase the risk of eye infections.

We all tend to have a different lipstick in every bag, ones for day, others for evening and ones we never even wear. This is totally fine but just make sure you keep them clean and if you come across one that is past it’s best, chuck it away and use another one. Oh, and don’t share them!

Eye and lip liners can last up to three years but it is likely you will use them before that, or they will dry up and crumble. Again, don’t pass these around on a night out and at the first sign of dehydration, bin and buy a new one.

Nail varnish is one of those products that never seems to die, but shake it and if the colour doesn’t completely mix or the varnish is too sticky to apply smoothly, it’s game over.

Got a tip we have missed, then get in touch and let us know.

How to Apply the Perfect Smoky Eye

Make up trends come and go on what seems like an almost daily basis, but if there’s one make-up look which is always in style, it’s the smoky eye. Achievable in a number of different tones with each more effective than the last, the killer smoky eye is easy to achieve providing you follow the right steps:

  • Make sure your face is super clean first so that you’ve got the best canvas on which to work. Opt for an all-round cleanser such as Decleor Hydra-Radiance Smoothing and Cleansing Mousse, which is suitable for all skin types.
  • Use a good eye cream which will help you to reduce the appearance of fine lines around the area. Nothing ruins a smoky eye quicker than all of your eye shadow disappearing under loose skin!
  • Apply a primer to your face, which will blur imperfections and smooth out your skin, making it far easier to apply an even layer of colour.
  • Use the right brushes. The applicators which are given away with most eye shadows are actually really rubbish for blending, so invest in a good set of brushes before you take the plunge.
  • Choose a shade which suits you – olive and darker skins look fantastic with a bronze-based gradient, while lighter skinned women look great with greys and blacks. If you’re feeling really brave, you could even opt for other hues, such as purple or a shimmery emerald which are both huge right now.
  • Use a cotton bud dipped into a little concealer to get rid of any mistakes or smudges, otherwise you’ll end up rubbing everything off and starting again!
  • If you use eyeliner – a harsh line of black on your lid will stand out a mile, whereas a well-blended line of kohl will make your eyes pop.
  • Use concealer (or dab some Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF30) under your eyes to ensure you don’t have dark bags, which could potentially ruin your whole look.
  • BLEND, BLEND, BLEND! The key to a smoky eye is that the colours are seamlessly blended together to create the whole look – fail to do so and ‘smoky’ becomes ‘stripey’!
