How to Protect Your Skin’s Biome
Photo by Daniel Apodaca on Unsplash

As we’ve mentioned previously, the skin’s biome is an umbrella term for all of the bacteria which lives on your skin. We’re primed, as humans, to see bacteria as a bad thing, but actually, protecting your skin’s biome is incredibly important if you want a balanced, healthy complexion. Fortunately, we have everything you need to protect your skin’s biome, regardless of your skin type. Here are five of the best products for the job:

REN Clean Skincare Perfect Canvas Clean Primer

REN Clean Skincare Perfect Canvas Clean Primer is a probiotic Primer that plumps skin, mattifies and fills in fine lines for the perfect makeup application. It contains skin-boosting extracts that help balance your good bacteria, reducing breakouts and promoting a healthy microbiome. It can be used on its own to give you smooth, mattified skin or as a primer underneath make up for the perfect canvas.

Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Clear Biome

These capsules do exactly what it says on the box – they work on your skin’s biome to give you a clear, blemish-free complexion. Skin Clear Biome is designed to work from the inside out: feeding the gut with bacteria to clarify and brighten skin. The formula is housed within a protective matrix to ensure active bacteria reach the area of the gut where they are most needed.

Elemis Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator

The Elemis Superfood range is all packed with naturally occurring ingredients, derived from superfoods, and this jelly exfoliator is made from antioxidant rich Nordic bilberry and black tea for healthy looking skin. It contains a prebiotic, naturally derived from sugar, that helps to leave skin feeling soft and smooth, without stripping natural oils while black seed oil supports the skin’s lipid barrier for a healthy glow.

Nouveau Prebiotic Eye Make-Up Remover Gel

The eyes are a tricky area – the skin is ultra delicate and finely balanced, while make-up for this area is often hardy and long-lasting. That’s why a specialist product is required to adequately remove cosmetics while protecting the delicate biome of the skin around the eye. Nouveau Prebiotic Eye Make-Up Remover Gel is an advanced oil-free, micellar gel eye make-up remover that contains powerful prebiotic ingredients to promote healthy skin microbiome, and to help prevent irritation.

Murad Prebiotic 3-In-1 MultiMist

Make-up can play havoc with the skin’s natural biome, preventing the transfer of oxygen and other nutrients. Murad Prebiotic 3-In-1 MultiMist is a 3-in-1 hydrating mist that hydrates, primes and sets makeup. The formula features hydrating sugars to moisturise and refresh skin, while a yeast peptide helps lock in hydration, making it the perfect, hard-working multitasker that your face needs.

When it comes to pumpkins, we choose them, carve them, roast them, bake them, even take our kids to be photographed in fields of them, but we don’t often think about slathering them onto our faces. That is, until recently, when a flurry of cosmetic companies began incorporating the potent plant, which is abundant in enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A and E, into their line of skin care products. Now, instead of thinking of pumpkins as something we use once a year to carve a scary face into and place a candle inside for spooky shadows, we’re looking at five of our favourite products which harness the power of this humble member of the squash family:

Dermalogica PowerBright Overnight Cream

As the name suggests, this cream from Dermalogica is intended for nighttime use and is formulated to optimise skin moisture recovery and help restore luminosity. As well as containing pumpkin enzyme, which smoothes and evens skin texture, it packs in antioxidant-rich cranberry and raspberry seed oils to help protect against the damaging effects of free radicals from pollution, and deliver essential fatty acids that moisturise to help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Elemis Superfood AHA Glow Cleansing Butter

If you suffer from a dull complexion, finding a cleanser which doesn’t further strip moisture and radiance is important. This cleansing butter from Elemis is a nourishing facial cleanser that removes makeup, daily pollutants and daily grime to reveal a healthy-looking radiance. It’s packed with brightening AHAs from pumpkin and acerola cherry, to help to reveal a fresh-faced glow and can be used as a daily cleanser, a deep cleansing mask or a hydrating makeup remover around the eyes and face for smooth and glowing skin.

Refinery Mattifying Moisturiser

While many people with oily skin steer clear of moisturiser, mistakenly assuming that they don’t need it, the reality is that oily skin often has underlying dryness that needs to be rebalanced to reduce sebum production. This moisturiser from Refinery contains pumpkin seed extract, which reduces shine with special optical effects, while oat kernel flour soothes and protects skin, and powerful sodium hyaluronate gives a boost of moisture. It’s a light, easily-absorbed formula which instantly reduces shine, making it perfect for oily complexions.

Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel

This potent exfoliator from Dermalogica contains a unique complex of potent phytoactive AHA extracts, lactic acid and fermented plant enzymes to increase epidermal cell turnover to reveal new, firmer skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s packed with pumpkin fruit enzyme and rice bran extract to resurface and help even out skin tone, while smoothing Australian caviar lime extracts brightens skin for a more radiant complexion. There are ten applications per tube and should be used once a week for best results.

Elemis Superfood Facial Wash

The Elemis Superfood range contains a bunch of naturally derived active ingredients, and this facial wash is no exception. As well as pumpkin seed oils, the wash is packed with extracts from avocado, broccoli, wheatgrass, kale, and nettle. These are paired with a natural prebiotic to help balance the skin’s precious microbiome. The result is a nourishing facial wash that revives and refreshes whilst deeply cleansing the skin.

Keep Your Routine Cruelty-Free

Whether you eat a vegan diet, are veggie, or still have meat in your diet, it’s important to most of us that our beauty products aren’t tested on animals. Cruelty-free beauty means that you can use products with the peace of mind that nothing you’re using has been tested on animals, and here at Pure Beauty, we try to offer as many of these products as we can find. Here are five of our favourites:

Dermalogica Age Bright Clearing Serum

This serum from Dermalogica is deisgned for people with ageing skin who still deal with adult acne or breakouts, giving you spot-busting power which will also tackle the signs of ageing. The AGE Bright™ Complex works with the skin’s natural microbiome for clearer, brighter skin and as well as being cruelty free, the formula is also gluten free, vegan friendly and contains no artificial fragrances, colours or parabens.

Orly Breathable Almond Milk

This beautiful soft taupe colour is the perfect neutral colour for autumn and is cruelty free, as are all of the polishes from Orly. The strong formulation means that you have no need for top coat or base coat and the advanced technology means that oxygen can still penetrate through to the nail, reducing any risk of damage from having your nails painted.

Dermalogica UltraCalming Calm Water-Gel

Many products for deeply dry skin are often oil-based, but this water-gel from Dermalogica is different. It’s designed for use on skin which suffers from sensitivity and redness and treats the underlying dryness using hyaluronic acid technology which works in different skin layers to increase and lock in moisture. It’s vegan friendly and cruelty free, as well as being free from gluten and parabens.

Dermalogica UltraCalming Barrier Defence Booster

This defence booster from Dermalogica is formulated using a combination of oils which not only moisturise the skin but also protect it from environmental stressors. Squalane locks in moisture, while soothing oat oil helps combat sensitivity and support healthy looking skin. It’s made using cruelty-free ingredients and can be applied directly to the skin, or mixed with your usual moisturiser for an added boost.

Dermalogica Phyto-Nature Firming Serum

This vegan, cruelty-free serum from Dermalogica is aimed at ageing skin and provides flash-firming properties with just one application. It’s clinically proven to double skins luminosity and minimise the appearance of fine lines after just one application, while reducing visible wrinkles in 4 weeks.

Did you know that pumpkins are packed with natural enzymes and acids which increase cell turnover so that skin is bright and smooth? Well they do, and the good news doesn’t stop there. This Halloween staple also contains antioxidant vitamin A and C which help soften and soothe skin and get ageing under control.

With all the said, let’s look at some of the products we sell on the site and see which ones you could use to get great skin before 31 October.

We absolutely adore the Elemis Superfood Facial Wash and for good reason! This gel cleanser is full of the nutrient-dense super greens you’d expect to find in a smoothie, but we don’t suggest drinking it! From the very first time you use this product, you are left with radiant skin and an outdoor-fresh glow that will look as if you’ve been for a brisk walk by the sea. Avocado, broccoli and pumpkin seed oil might usually be found in a hipster salad, but in this case, they have been combined with a natural pre-biotic to balance the skin’s microbiome and with wheatgrass, nettle and kale too, your complexion will look luminous and bright.

You might not be thinking about the sun when the witching hour approaches, but the Dermalogica Pure Light SPF 50 treats hyperpigmentation and keeps you safe from the UV light that can strike at any time of the year. It’s the pumpkin fruit ferment in this cream, that helps exfoliate away dead cells and eliminate dark spots cause by the sun. Red algae, seaweed and safflower seeds have all been added to the mix to create a product at we think you will love. Apply to cleansed and toned skin before you go outside and this will work well all year round and keep those Halloween vampires away.

For a vegan option, why not give the Elemis Superfood AHA Glow Booster a go? This plant-based concentrate formula is ideal if you want to have healthy, glowing skin all year round but won’t have you looking as orange as a pumpkin – do not worry. This is ideal for anyone whose skin is a little tired and needs a helping hand to look brighter and happier again. Pumpkin and cherry extracts, which are both rich in AHAs and enzymes, have been mixed with rice water and green tea seed oil and once you have given the bottle a shake, you are ready to smooth away the dullness and let the light in.

If you are looking for real results from your beauty products, look no further than the Dermalogica Rapid Reveal Peel. This maximum strength exfoliant contains acids and fermented plant enzymes to increase skin renewal and reveal new, firmer skin with reduced fine lines and wrinkles. Pumpkin together with rice bran, resurface and even out skin tone, while Australian caviar lime brightens skin so you are left with a more radiant, but still natural, complexion. With each packet containing 10 applications you have the right amount for perfect results each time you use this peel.

If you would like more details, why not get in touch and see what pumpkin potions and lotions you can use to make your skin come to life this Halloween.

We Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside!

Royalty-free Image

We all love the seaside, here at Pure Beauty – the sun, sand, deck chairs and a cheeky ice cream…what’s not to love? But there’s even more to love about the sea, namely the wonderful, skin-nourishing ingredients that we can find beneath the waves. We’ve put together a list of five of our favourite products which are derived from things found in the sea, so you can see the benefits of marine-based extracts.

Dermalogica Power Rich

Marine botanicals are particularly powerful in the fight against ageing, which is why this moisturiser for prematurely ageing skin contains red seaweed extract to help stimulate and strengthen damaged tissue while supplying vital nutrients to help reduce fine, dry lines, resurface and regenerate skin. It’s also rich in phytic acid and hyaluronic acid to aid in softening and exfoliating the skin.

Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel

If your complexion is looking dull and lacklustre, you’ll need a potent pick-me-up to give you your zing back. This peel from Elemis contains bladderwrack, seaweed also known as fucus vesiculosus, which s rich in minerals and trace elements and has powerful moisturising properties. Papain from papaya gently lifts dead skin cells while bromelain from pineapple purifies the skin.

Jan Marini Age Intervention Eye Cream

This cream from Jan Marini is specifically designed to target the eyes and contains algae extract which helps soften, smooth, hydrate, firm and define the appearance of the eye area. It provides dramatic reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and results in smoother, more supple looking skin.

Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Booster

Often, ocean-derived ingredients are associated with anti-ageing, but here, Dermalogica has harnessed the soothing power of seaweed to help control acne-prone skin. The spot-busting formula also contains phytoplankton extract which will work with skin’s natural microbiome and help prevent over drying.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Serum

Arguably, Elemis is the home of some of the best marine-based products on the market, with its own range of Marine Creams. But this serum also contains seaweed extract and is just as deserving of a place on your shelf. It firms, smooths and lifts the skin, giving immediate tightening and firming results for a “face lifting” effect.
