The Honest Truth About Ageing

Unless you’re one of those unspeakably lucky people who has as the perfect mixture of genetics which allow you to stay looking youthful, right until you’re in your 80s, you’re probably going to have to come to terms with the fact that your face will start to show signs of getting older.

For some reason, many women seem to find the ageing process something to be ashamed of and will go to great lengths to avoid talking about it. Here at Pure Beauty, while we sell lots of amazing products which slow down the signs of ageing, we don’t think that the natural ageing process is anything to hide away from.

With this in mind, we thought we would take a look at the honest truth about ageing and what you can expect to happen as the years pass.

Drier Skin

It’s an unfortunate fact that as we age our skin not only loses the ability to produce its own moisture, it also finds it harder to retain moisture which is applied to the skin. Dry skin is something which almost every older woman has to learn to deal with, even if they’ve had oily or combination skin in their younger years. Investing in a good moisturiser which is specifically designed for ageing skin is the best way to tackle this, as well as using powerful night creams and serums to enhance the power of whichever moisturisers you choose to use.

Loss of Muscle Tone

Another factor of ageing is loss of muscle tone, which can give the appearance of a droopy face, and jowls underneath your chin. This can create the look of a double chin, even if you’re slim everywhere else. Facial exercises which help to activate and tone the muscles can help greatly, as well as ensuring that you apply all of your skincare with an upwards stroking motion so as not to exacerbate the effects of muscle droopage, by dragging the face downwards when you apply your creams.

Less Collagen

Everyone has collagen in their skin and this is the thing between the upper layers and your muscles which allows youthful faces to look plump and smoothed. As we age, our ability to produce collagen naturally is greatly reduced which is why skin begins to look thinner and more papery, losing that youthful plumpness. There are lots of creams on the market which stimulate natural collagen production and investing in one of these as you get older is a really good way to combat that thin-skinned look.

skin routineYou might feel as though you’ve got your skincare routine dialled in with a solid “cleanse, tone and moisturise” using your favourite products, but if you’re still having issues then it may be that the products you’re using are not quite right for you. Today, we’re looking at some common skincare issues and where you may be going wrong with your products.

Dry Patches

If you’re suffering with areas of dryness, there’s a good chance that your products aren’t rich enough to deeply moisturise your skin. There’s also a chance that your current cleanser is a little too harsh, so switching to a gentle cleanser like Decleor Phytopeel Smooth Exfoliating Cream will allow you to gently remove dead skin and debris, while Decleor 24 Hour Hydrating Cream Rich will keep your skin hydrated all day long.

Acne

If you suffer with acne and have regular breakouts despite having a skincare routine in place, it could mean that your selection of products simply isn’t medicated or strong enough to deal with such a complex skin complaint. Opting for products from the MediBac range from Dermalogica will help you to target the cause of your acne and get it under control, giving you clearer skin in the long term.

Oily Skin

The cause of oily skin can be quite complicated – sometimes, it’s because the products you’re using are too rich but sometimes it can be because your skin is highly sensitised due to dryness and your skin responding with too much sebum to overcompensate. The Dermalogica UltraCalming Sensitised Skin Treatment Kit contains everything you need to help to soothe and repair sensitive skin, helping you to regain balance.

Wrinkles

Wrinkles are, for most of us, a fact of life and simply a side effect of getting older. However, if you moisturise daily but still feel as though your skin is ageing at an exponential rate, it may be that your products don’t contain enough anti-ageing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. Decleor Energising Smoothing Cream SPF15 contains active ingredients which will fight fine lines and the signs of ageing, as well as containing SPF to protect against further damage from the sun.

Ingrown Hairs

Lots of people who shave regularly suffer with ingrown hairs, especially people who shave their faces, however there are plenty of products you should be using to combat this problem. Decleor Triple Action Shave Perfector is a super serum which softens hair, opens the pores and protects the skin before, during and after shaving to ensure you avoid ingrown hairs and shaving rash.

aging, beauty, older, over 40

So often, younger stars such as Rihanna and Emma Watson are held up as examples of great beauty, and while there’s absolutely no doubt that these girls are blessed in the face department, it is difficult for those amongst us who are over 40 to relate to them. Unless you’re lucky enough to have seriously good genes, there’s a decent chance that your face will have started to soften a little and some of the early signs of ageing are starting to creep in. Anti-aging products can help, but we thought we’d share with you our favourite beauty icons over 40; women who are ageing beautifully and with oh-so-much grace…

Dame Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren

Ever since those shots of Dame Helen rocking her bright red bikini, there’s been no doubt that this lady has embraced the ageing process and made it her bitch. She wears her hair soft around her face to highlight her incredible features and knows exactly how to dress to accentuate all of her assets! We think Dame Helen rocks and we hope to look half as good as her by the time we’re 70 (yes, really, she’s actually 70!)

Monica Bellucci

Monica Bellucci

Monica Bellucci is an unfathomable FIFTY ONE years of age and shows barely any signs of getting older. Still considered one of the sexiest women in film, Monica proves that age really is nothing but a number whilst staying sultry and seductive as ever.

Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams seems to have been on our tellies for ages, with roles in shows such as Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives, and there’s a good reason for that – the star is now 52 years old and has been on our screens for over 30 years with her acting and singing careers! Having said that, she’s barely aged a day in that time and her daughter Melanie knows why, saying “My [Mum] has such a natural approach to beauty. Sure, she’s game for a glam session when it’s appropriate but within our family, we’ve always been taught that less is more.”

Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara

Best known for playing Jay Pritchett’s young, glamorous wife ‘Gloria’ in Modern Family, Sofia Vergara is actually now 43 years old herself! The Colombian beauty doesn’t eat red meat and has never smoked, both of which have probably contributed greatly to her lack of aging – she also says that Sofia Loren is her beauty icon and she’d never leave the house without make up!

Ming-Na

Ming Na

Ming-Na, best known for her role in ER and being the voice of Disney’s Mulan, is perhaps the most remarkable of all the ladies we’ve listed here. The Macau-born Chinese actress looks barely a day over 21, but is actually FIFTY ONE! Her make-up at events is always neutral and beautifully subtle, so we know she’s not hiding a whole load of wrinkles anywhere, so we can only assume that excellent genes and an amazing beauty routine have kept her looking so fresh!
