We know that exercising can impact all areas in your life, for the better, but we also know that getting time to actually do it can be hard. We’ve had a look at how you can fit just a little bit of workout time into your schedule so you feel bright and happy all day long.

Jog on
If you’re not keen on intense cardio training but would like to break out in a slight sweat, then how about some gentle jogging? This exercise helps to strengthen your entire body and keep you in good shape, without putting huge pressure on your joints. We do suggest that you invest in some decent trainers, take water with you, and always warm-up and cool down to prevent injuries.

Speed walking
Taking it down another notch from jogging, we have speed walking. You might not know this but a brisk walk can help build your cardiovascular health and can also boost your mental wellbeing. This really is a low commitment exercise that anyone can fit into their day, and if you have a dog, even better as they need their walk and you can get fit together!

Yoga
As well as keeping your heart healthy, it is also important to ensure you have muscle flexibility and a still mind, and yoga can do this for you. Yoga, as well as tai chi and Pilates, engage your muscles so they stay healthy and you also have the meditative elements that still your mind, allow you to focus on your breathing and bring down your anxiety.

Crunch it out
If you want to work on your abs without going OTT in the gym, simple crunches are the way to go. Crossing your arms across your chest while doing these exercises can help you to avoid pulling on your neck and causing injury. If you aren’t quite sure how to get this right, ask a PT and they will be only too happy to assist so you know you are on the right track.

Shake it out
Dancing is an amazing way to keep fit, stay healthy and make friends. Zumba, ballet, salsa, and tap are just some of the options out there and not only will taking part make you feel good but because of the social element, you will feel like you’ve had a group hug at the end of the session.

Go for a swim
We often think about swimming in the summer but this is a great cardio exercise that will benefit your health and mental well-being all year round. As swimming isn’t dangerous for joints and muscles, it’s something many of us can enjoy, and if you are serious about your strokes, book in a lesson or two and really make this sport work for you.

Raise your heals
Heel raises, which involve deliberately lifting and lowering your heels off the floor, can help to address weakness, balance, range of motion, and coordination of the foot and ankle. This might seem like a really simple move, but it goes a long way to stretch out those muscles and keep you supple.

Skip away
A rope and a little space can really get your heart rate up and those feel-good endorphins pumping! You don’t have to do it for ages, and while you’ll be surprised at how hard it is when you start, build it up over time and your fitness levels will boom.

With 10 March marking ‘National Pack Your Lunch Day’ we have been looking at some simple hacks that will make your midday meal tasty, nutritious and keep you going all afternoon.

Wash up
There’s nothing worse than opening a lunch box when you get up in the morning to find leftover food sticking to the sides. Get into the habit of cleaning out lunch boxes each evening, so that they are ready to roll the next day. The same goes for water bottles, flasks and spoons.

Be prepared
Not everyone likes to make sandwiches the night before, but you can put together pieces of fruit, cut carrot sticks and put them in pots, wrap up flapjacks and get cutlery ready in boxes, so you are organised.

Freeze it
Rolls, muffins and quiches make great lunch times you will really enjoy. If you make them in bulk and freeze in individual servings, you can take them out in the evening and they will be ready by lunchtime.

Fill up with fibre
A wholegrain sandwich, pitta bread, wrap or filled roll should not be disregarded. Packed with fibre, these are a great way to stay full for the afternoon and if you go for a good filling such as tuna, cheese or humous you have a serving of protein too. If you don’t want to eat a soggy sandwich, spread mayo between slices of cheese or ham rather than putting it straight onto the bread, and pat dry cucumber and tomato slices as well as lettuce leaves with a paper towel.

Think of five a day
Sliced fruit, veggie sticks and even green leaf leftovers are easy lunchbox fillers that go perfectly with a side serving of dip. Carrot, celery and cucumber with humous is a popular choice, or salsa if you are looking for something with more a kick. Create fruit salads with sliced grapes, berries, apple chunks and tangerine segments and you are on the way to five a day.

Be water wise
Juices, sports drinks and squashes are full of sugars, so instead why not add fresh fruit pieces into water bottles for a burst of flavour and to keep hydrated.

Use a flask
If you like soups and stews, why not get a flask and take that with you each day? Many modern-day models will keep things warm for up to six hours and this will also save you from having to use the work microwave – which can only be a good thing?

Team effort
Why not work together as a couple or family and plan lunches so that you are all are opening you lunchbox and finding something you really want to eat. If you do this, tummies will be full, brains will be ready to work and waste is kept to a minimum.

The term ‘super-food’ is banded around the place like no one’s business at the moment. From avocados and spinach to almonds and blueberries, these natural beauties are all over the place, but no one ever really seems to put the mighty mango in this group?

Well, we think they should be and are here to put them on the healthy map.

Mangos grow in tropical climates and are a nutritionally rich fruit with a unique flavor, fragrance, taste, and it has so many heath promoting qualities we don’t know where to start.

Cancer Prevention
Some research has shown that the antioxidant properties in mango fruit can help protect against breast, colon and prostate cancers as well as leukaemia.

Eye Sight
A cup of sliced mango contains around 25% of the RDA of Vitamin A which is key to good eyesight and can prevent night blindness and dry eyes.

Cholesterol Count
Due to the high levels of fibre, pectin and Vitamin C in mangos they can help lower cholesterol levels.

Glowing Skin
Mangos help clear clogged pores and eliminate acne, and because they are rich in skin loving Vitamin E, your complexion will glow if you eat them as part of a balanced diet.

Digestion
Mangos are packed with clever enzymes that break down protein and come with fibre both of which help with digestion and elimination.

Immune System Booster
Due to the generous amounts of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, plus 25 different carotenoids, fresh mango is the perfect way to keep your immune system healthy and strong.

The Other Bits
Mangos also come with Vitamin B6 and other B vitamins that help with hormone production and prevent heart disease. They have plenty of potassium that balances out salt intake as well as copper that helps with the production of red blood cells.

So you have got your mango, but how do you prepare it so none goes to waste?

Hold the mango on its side and cut down either side of the large, central seed so you have two big halves.

Place each half on a chopping board, peel face down, and cut the exposed flesh in a horizontal and vertical pattern, taking care not to cut too deep through the skin or into your fingers. Then invert the whole half and push out easy to manage cubes.

You can use this cubes to make a super effective face mask. Simply blend the mango and apply to the face and let your skin soak up the beta-carotene and Vitamin C help which will repair spots and blemishes and recharge your complexion.

Otherwise eat the mango solo, on cereal, in smoothies, add it to salads, pop on the top of ice cream, mix into a salsa, blend into yogurt, make a pie. The ideas are endless, the taste is incredible.

Got a mango recipe you like, send it over, we would love to give it a try.

Beat Sugar for Good

Got a sweet tooth but can’t give up the white stuff?

This isn’t surprising given that our bodies are pretty programmed to want more and more sugar for energy and our brains are bombarded with images and adverts 24/7.

Whilst we expect to find refined white sugar in sweet foods, it is really easy to unknowingly consume extra sugar every day from ready meals, processed foods, white bread, soup and even so called ‘healthy’ snacks.

We have found some easy ways to swap sugar for better choices so that you not only save your teeth from decay and your waistline from extra inches but also amazingly, give yourself more energy. Yes, really.

The breakfast swap is one the easiest to make and it’s one that can make a huge different to your entire day and health. Forget sugary cereal and pastries and instead go for porridge with sliced banana or a handful of blueberries and skimmed milk. You can also opt for a green smoothie packed with kale, avocado, almond milk and a scoop of peanut butter and you will be ready to go.

Forget those big fat fluffy white bagels stuffed with cream cheese and jam and instead make the wiser choice of a wholemeal English muffin topped with a tablespoon of almond butter and fresh strawberry slices.

Skip that large glass of orange juice and instead actually eat an orange. Being doing this you’ll reduce your sugar intake, increase your fibre intake and get a good dose of immune boosting vitamin C. Win, win.

Mega sandwiches made from thick white slice bread are a big no, no. A good swap is dark rye bread which tends to be less processed, contains considerably less refined sugars than it’s white cousin and is also higher in fibre, making you feel fuller for longer. Forget processed ham and pre-made spreads and instead pack a healthy punch with sliced avocado and smoked salmon, egg and tomato or tuna and black olives which all taste so good you won’t even know you are being healthy.

The fruit flavourings in yoghurts tend to come from artificial means or concentrate so they don’t contain any real fruit with nutritional benefits – just sugar! Go for a protein-rich plain yoghurt and top with fresh fruit for an antioxidant hit. Do remember not to over do fruit, yes it is good for you and counts as one of your five a day, but too much can overload your systems with fructose.

We all love pizzas but by swapping the traditional white base for a cauliflower one will make some serious nutritional improvements to your meal and your figure will love you too. Ready-made pizza bases tend to be high in sugar, so get creative and top a cauliflower base with fresh tomato sauce, goats cheese and olives.

Remember sugar is hidden everywhere. It is really scary to think there can be up to a staggering 22g of sugar per 100g of ketchup, that is a lot. Go back to basics and get some ripe tomatoes, lime juice, chili and spring onions and you can create a yummy salsa that won’t make your blood sugar spike but will get your taste buds tingling.

Rather than swapping fizzy drinks for diet options instead jazz up water with ice, mint leaves, cucumber or lemon slices and you will seriously reduce the sugar you consume and it will work wonders for your skin too.

None of this is rocket science, but we are pretty sure that using some of these simple, practical ideas will have a positive impact on your life and you never know, you might even like the changes.
