Think All Teen Skin is Oily? Think Again!

If you mention teen skin issues to almost anyone, they’re usually going to assume that you’re referring to oily skin and pimples. However, there are plenty of teenagers out there who struggle with dry skin, especially when the weather turns cold and they’re out in the elements between school and their social lives. Today, we’re sharing with you five products which could help to nourish and rebalance your teen’s dry skin:

Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque

Masques are a great way to treat teen skin and this one from Dermalogica contains calming botanical extracts of bitter orange, hops, cucumber and arnica reduce inflammation, while antioxidant vitamins A, C and E and pro-vitamin B5 help to nourish and replenish the skin. It’s suitable for use on all skin conditions, which means you won’t have to worry about it exacerbating eczema or acne, to which many teens are prone.

REN Clean Skincare Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk

Keeping the skin clean is vital when you’re a teen, but if you have dry skin you may find that many of the teen-specific cleansers are simply too harsh on your already-irritated skin. REN Clean Skincare Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk is a gentle cleansing milk with a multi-action formula that fights environmental aggressors, increases skin resilience and minimises the signs of irritation and sensitivity. It’s perfect for teens who want to stay clean without causing more dryness.

Dermalogica Hydrating Lotion

It goes without saying that dry skin needs moisture, but many heavy moisturisers are aimed at older people who are hoping to combat the signs of ageing – not something that’s usually at the forefront of teenage minds! Dermalogica Hydrating Lotion is a lightweight lotion that helps soothe discomfort and hydrate areas that feel dry and can also help to relieve the dryness often associated with some acne treatments.

Elemis Gentle Foaming Facial Wash

As we touched upon above, keeping teen skin clean without stripping away the natural oils can be tricky. Elemis Gentle Foaming Facial Wash is a gentle wash that combines extracts such as fig, and apple amino acid, which helps produce the foamy texture and protects the skin’s moisture barrier. It also contains the ultra-exotic Pracaxi oil, found in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, which works to soften skin, but also helps maintain its delicate balance, respecting the skin’s natural oil levels.

REN Clean Skincare Clearcalm 3 Replenishing Gel Cream

While it’s true that not all teen skin is oily, it can still be prone to breakouts, thanks to the riptide of surging hormones coursing through them on a daily basis. REN Clean Skincare Clearcalm 3 Replenishing Gel Cream is a soothing gel-cream formulated to leave blemish and breakout-prone skin comfortable and calm while helping to combat the appearance of blemishes. It nourishes the skin, reduces breakouts and will even help to fade scars from old spots.

Scarring can be caused by a number of things, from accidents to acne and everything in between. For some people, scars are like a badge of honour, but many people want to do everything they can to reduce the appearance of scars, and when left untreated, obvious scarring can lead to poor mental health. Fortunately, we have several clever products here at Pure Beauty which can lead to a marked improvement in the appearance of scarring. Here are five of the best:

Elemis Herbal Lavender Repair Mask

This clay-based mask from Elemis contains several skin-soothing ingredients which can calm the skin and reduce redness. It also contains lavender essential oil, which reduces the inflammation of acne and scarring. It doesn’t set on your skin, therefore it doesn’t dry your skin out and it can be used as a special overnight treatment to repair and heal blemished skin.

Evolve Organic Beauty Super Berry Body Oil

Evolve Organic Beauty Super Berry Body Oil is a moisturising body oil formulated to revive dry and mature skin, and improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks. This vegan formula is 100% natural and gets its scar-busting properties from Chilean rosehip oil, which has been used for centuries for its unique ability to revive skin that is prone to stretch marks or scarring.

Murad InvisiScar Resurfacing Treatment

As you can tell from the name of this product from Murad, it’s specifically formulated to help deal with post-blemish scars and discolouration, making it a saviour for anyone with acne-prone skin. BHA exfoliates, while a unique blend of highly purified centella asiatica and vitamin C encourages natural radiance and a healthier-looking complexion. It’s so potent that it helps to minimise the look of post-blemish scar size, depth and discolouration in 8 weeks.

Decleor Prolagene Gel

Prolagène Gel contains an amino acid called proline L, which is similar to plant collagen and helps rebuild the skin’s supporting fibres. The formulation also includes osmanthus aabsolute for its potent healing action, making it perfect for skin which has scars and stretch marks. It has a visibly firming effect that builds up with regular use to smooth skin imperfections, as well as acting on the whole of the skin’s structure to speed up cell renewal and improve the look of stretch marks and scarring.

Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Ageing Intensive Skin Treatment Oil

This skin treatment oil from Aromatherapy Associates is a multifunctional product which performs a number of tasks. As well as providing hydration for dry, dehydrated and more mature skin types, it can also be used on scar tissue twice a day to help reduce its appearance. It contains a healing blend of lavender and rose oils, along with vitamin E and rosehip seed oil to nourish and encourage natural skin renewal.

Elemis Balancing Lavender Toner

If you have ever suffered from acne and spots you know it can be a total pain on many levels. From the redness and throbbing, to scars and cover up, blemishes can impact not only how our skin looks, but how we feel.

While we don’t have a magic wand, we wish we did, but at Pure Beauty we sell a range of first-class products that will help to calm, nourish and soothe your skin and help you to feel happy and confident about your complexion once again.

If you love your current products but need a little extra spot blasting care, we would suggest the Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash. This gentle foaming cleanser is the perfect way to take control of breakouts and excess surface oils and has been created for breakout prone skin. Antiseptic extracts of mint, eucalyptus and tea tree come together to clear away bacteria, while menthol and camphor cool the inflammation of spots. The great thing is, the skin is left clean and bright and you know you are doing the best for your skin.

Your skin repairs as you sleep, so why not boost your love for it by using the Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel. This gel has been created to help clear skin congestion and help prevent future breakouts, which can only be a good thing. It is suitable for acne and breakout-prone skin and can be applied to problem areas and green tea, hyaluronic acid, rosemary, zinc, and yeast will heal your skin overnight.

All skin can benefit from using a toner and the Elemis Balancing Lavender Toner is good if you do have blemishes. This product not only tones the skin but also helps rebalance the pH levels without the use of alcohol or harsh chemicals. Extracts of sweet betty flower and saponins balance and soften the skin, while lavender helps reduce acne inflammation.

The Dermalogica Hydrating Lotion is a lightweight moisturiser that helps dehydrate, breakout-irritated skin feel better. As part of the ‘Clear Start’ range, this sheer, easy-to-apply formula helps soothe discomfort and is easier on the skin that some acne treatments. Moisturising, squalane softens and nourishes while ginger, orange, and grapefruit soothe and protect.

As the name suggests, the Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque is a clay masque and one that helps clear breakouts and also helps minimise premature ageing – winner! Oil-absorbing clays help to detoxify skin while salicylic acid clears the pore congestion which can really impact complexions. This can be used up to three times a week and with oat, safflower oil and niacinamide, your skin will feel soft, smooth and free from irritation.

Acne can leave scars, but the Jan Marini Bioglycolic Bioclear Cream can help. This multi-functional resurfacing cream comes with a combination of three acids that together address the appearance of acne scars, pigmentation, rosacea, fine lines, and wrinkles. For best use, cleanse your skin thoroughly before applying, then apply a thin layer to your face. Do note that excessive drying of the skin can happen, so start with one application daily and gradually increase to two or three times daily. All skin is different, so see how it goes and do what is best for you.

One final idea we have for you is the Elemis S.O.S. Emergency Cream. This is a gorgeous, intense moisturiser created to restore hydration levels, whilst repairing and de-sensitising blemish prone, dry or sensitive skin.

At Pure-Beauty, we are massive fans of natural essential oils, and even more so during the warm summer months when need to take care of ourselves that little bit more.

We have had a look at the benefits of adding oils into your beauty routine and we think you might be pleasantly surprised at how mother nature can make things so much better.

Keep breakouts at bay
When it is hot we tend to sweat more than usual and this can lead to a build-up of oil under the skin and cause annoying spots. Lavender Oil is perfect for dealing with this because it is packed with the antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can help prevent the bacteria that causes acne from growing as well as treating the blemishes you do get. Dilute a little oil with water and dab gently to the affected area using a clean cotton bud and it will soothe and nourish the skin the natural way. You can also mix the oil with cold water for a simple toner that is especially good for treating oily skin.

We are massive fans of Tea Tree Oil and it is our acne go to product thanks to the really powerful antiseptic qualities and vibrant scent. Simply add a few drops to cool water and apply to your face using a clean soft cloth and let the oils get to work.

Oils for your skin
Bear with us on this one because we know it might sound wrong, but putting oils on your skin can be amazing.
The summer brings many joys, but it can also make our skin dehydrated and tired, however adding an essential oil into the mix can bring it back to life. Rosehip Oil is a good choice because this rich, smooth oil sinks into your skin leaving it soft and supple without a trace of greasiness, just vibrancy. Packed with essential fatty acids plus Vitamins A and C this is a true beauty must have. As well as helping with fine lines, it is also brilliant for the scars and stretch marks many of us are conscious of in the summer but do remember to still apply sun cream if you are going outside.

Look after your head
If you think Chamomile is only for drinking in tea, you’ll be surprised to know that it also soothes and hydrates an irritated scalp – something that can happen when the heat is high. Simply adding a few drops of oil to your shampoo or conditioner can make a big difference and ease itching without the need for any chemicals.

Sage is often thought of as a little bit of magic and we agree when it comes to getting super shiny hair. As an astringent, it is beneficial for hair growth but also fights dandruff and encourages glossy locks. You can simply apply a little oil to your scalp and let nature take care of the rest.

Oils for hair don’t stop here with Argon, Avocado and Coconut all being offering a boost, so them as a regular, weekly treatment and we are pretty sure you will see the shine in no time at all.

Happy feet
Back to those medium-chain fatty acids from Coconut Oil and we would suggest you apply this loving to your feet and give them the care and attention they deserve. Coconut Oil is totally nourishing and will get to work on tough, dry skin, leaving your toes as soft as a baby’s in no time at all.
