Whether you are at home, or away this summer, getting it right when it comes to summer wardrobe essentials can be a minefield.

With so much choice on the High Street and great savings to be made on designer brands, the urge to splurge can be tempting.

While you can buy everything in sight, it is more than likely come October, half the items you bought will still have tags on them and that pineapple T-shirt, with matching flamingo shorts will be ‘out of trend’ and in the charity bag.

We have put together the key pieces we think will take you from morning to night in style, but without breaking the bank or adding to the landfill.

Sunglasses
Starting at the top, sunglasses are a must when the sun shines, and even when it doesn’t. Department stores have some pretty good brands on sales at the moment, Boots is one stop sunglasses shop and of course if you want to spend top dollar, then the designer brands are very cool and should stand the test of time.

Vests
Whether you go for bright and bold, spaghetti straps or cami style, a stack of fresh vests will see you through the entire summer. They can be worn under dresses, with shorts, team them with yoga pants or a pleated skirt and you have the recipe for success. Yes, you can get them for less than the cost of a take away coffee in some shops, but just check the quality of the fabric and ensure they fit well and give the right amount of stretch and support.

Flip Flops
OK, you can’t wear these 24/7 but because they come in a range of colours, at various price points, flip flips are a total summer staple. Great for the beach and poolside, add a little glitter or flowers and you can match with jeans and a tee for the perfect BBQ outfit.

Denim Jacket
You really can’t go wrong with a denim jacket for the summer. Perfect over dresses, it gives an urban feel that a cardigan doesn’t quite capture but also great with a white shirt and capris when the sun goes down and you are out for drinks.

Tote Bag
This is a must have for the summer. Go big and you can still take it on a plane and you will fit everything in it from your iPad and jacket to a towel, ballet pumps and sun cream. There are some brilliant buys out there are the moment in a range of fab colours that will see you through to the winter.

Bikini
Ok, don’t be shy now. You really don’t have to be a super model to wear a bikini and if you search social media, women are coming out to support one another as they bare some flesh and overcome body hang ups for once and all. Many shops offer mix and match options so you can choose your size and style and create a look that is as individual for you.

Maxi Dress
A block colour maxi dress is perfect for the summer as it will go with pretty much anything and work for every situation. Wear solo on the beach, team with silver sandals for a sophisticated evening look and add a cashmere wrap in September to keep the holiday vibe going just a little bit longer.

Whatever you wear this summer, add sun cream and a smile and have a fabulous time.

Are screens taking over your life?

We all know that it is important to limit screen time for kids, but how about adults?

An increasing number of us are using screens for business and pleasure and at times it can feel as if they are taking over our lives and health.

It sounds silly, and even a bit nanny state, but it is important that you develop a healthy attitude towards using screens, big and small, so we have looked at some of the issues and how to get around then.

Spending too much time posting on Facebook and tweeting on Twitter means you could be adding inches to your waistline as you build your friends online. Sitting on the sofa is comfy, and warm as the nights draw in, but it can also lead to weight gain, which in turn can increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease. If you are going to use your phone for something, upload an exercise app, get on your trainers and jog around the park and smile at your increased in activity rather rather your increased number of ‘friends’.

Believing the hype of social media could make you feel depressed. It is really easy to look online and see other people on holiday, looking tanned, with their ‘amazing’ husband, but remember this is only what they want you to see. Real life isn’t just what is posted online so don’t get blue if you aren’t in Barbados and are single – the grass isn’t always greener.

You might also want to remember that from time to time it is good to get out and talk to people face to face. Social media certainly brings people together and can be a great way to keep in touch, but nothing beats real life interaction. Set dates with your partner, lunch with your family and nights out with the girls. You can post photos after the event, but going out will do you the world of good and bring you back to reality.

Spending too much time looking at a screen will increase the blue wavelengths your brain receives and this can really affect your natural circadian rhythms and mess around with your melatonin levels. The consequences of this is that your mood can be disrupted as can your sleep, neither of which will do you any favours. Try to turn screens off at least an hour before you go to bed, longer if you can and this way you can really switch off. Don’t keep screens in your bedroom and instead of using your phone as an alarm, go back to basics and get a clock.

There is no getting away from the fact that many jobs involve spending a lot of time at a computer screen, but this doesn’t have to lead to aches and pains. The main thing is to set up your workstation correctly, and many companies have an HR or IT department that do this for you, so check if yours does. Ensure your screen is big enough and is set at the right level. You need to have a good chair that offers support and as you work make sure your hips are square and your your feet are flat on the floor. It is vital to take regular breaks from your computer as this will not only to rest your eyes, but gives you time to stretch your legs and reduce the risk of neck, shoulder and back pain.

Remember your mum saying you would get square eyes if you sat too close to the telly? You might have laughed at her but it is possible she could see into the future and was right. Look after your eyes and make sure you have them tested on a regular basis. If you start to suffer with headaches or blurred vision, this could indicate you are using your screen too much and can be a sign of possible issues with your eye-sight.

Go screen free at some point in the week – that doesn’t mean when you are asleep. We aren’t talking about a complete detox but maybe turn your phone off at work, don’t use social media on a Sunday and certainly don’t be flicking across social media when you are in the company of others.

Have a think about this and we think there are a couple of easy to make changes that could have a big impact.

As we head further into December the days are drawing in and temperatures are dropping. Whilst it’s tempting to snuggle up on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate rather than getting your trainers on, don’t.

Getting outdoors and raising your heartbeat can increase energy levels and decrease tension, frustration and depression – feelings that can intensify during the long winter months.

Regular exercise will make you feel more energetic and your body’s immune system should get stronger, reducing your risk of coughs and colds. Exercising outside in the winter burns more calories than during warmer months and releases more of those feel-good hormones, endorphins.

What are you waiting for?

Let’s get started.

Warm up
Before any workout it’s vital to warm up. Whether you walk, jog on the spot or even skip, five minutes of activity followed by simple stretches will warm your muscles and help prevent injuries.

Dress for success
You might get hot mid-cycle but if it is really cold outside, you need to be dressed correctly. Go for light layers, breathable socks and if it is freezing wrap a scarf around your nose and mouth to warm the air before you breathe it in. Don’t forget you lose a lot of heat through your head, so wear a hat as it will make a big difference.

Get your route right
Whether you are cycling, running or walking a safe, stable, well-lit route is key in winter. If you exercise in the dark wear bright, reflective clothing, tell someone where you’re going, take your mobile but avoid listening to music as this can make your really vulnerable.

Get a buddy
When it’s warm under the duvet it’s easy to press the snooze button on your alarm but if you exercise with someone else you have to get up. Whether it’s your partner, sister or best friend, being accountable is a sure fire way of getting those trainers on whatever the weather.

One step at a time
Slowly build the amount of exercise you do and if you can’t manage a long session in one go, break it up into manageable chunks. Over time you will see improvements and that will make venturing out all the more worthwhile.

Have a goal
If you’re working towards an end result, you will be more likely to keep up with your exercise schedule. It might feel like hard work when you are cycling into a cold wind but those miles will really count towards a summer sportif and crossing the finishing line in record time will feel amazing.

Cool down but don’t freeze
Even if it is bitter outside, you will still get hot and need to cool down afterwards. To avoid getting too chilled the key is to keep your cool down brief. Slow down your pace for the last five minutes or so of your run and inside to stretch before showering.

Drink Up
You might not sweat as much as you exercise in the winter but you still need to keep hydrated. Take a bottle of water out with you and ensure you drink enough post-run or cycle however cold you have been.

Be realistic
As we have already said, whilst it is good to exercise you need to be safe. If it looks like you will have to battle ice and winds, rather than pounding the streets enjoy a gym session, go out later or even take a break that day.

Whatever you do, enjoy it.
