Have Yourself and Oil-Free Christmas

If you suffer with oily skin, this time of year can play absolute havoc with your complexion. Between central heating, too much food and drink during Christmas parties and the cold weather, skin which already over produces oil can go into overdrive. The best way to combat this is to invest in some good oil-free products which will help keep your skin in great condition without exacerbating any overproduction. Here are four of our favourite products which are completely oil-free but will give your skin a real treat during the festive season.

Dermalogica Active Moist

Although many people with oily skin shy away from moisturiser, it can actually be even more essential to moisturise oily skin, as the oiliness can be caused by an underlying dryness problem. This moisturiser from Dermalogica is lightweight and oil-free, and absorbs into the skin without leaving a slick on the surface. It creates an invisible barrier which stops your skin from losing natural moisture and can help to create a smooth base for your makeup. It contains natural extract of lemon, watercress, burdock and ivy, which are all astringent and will help to keep oil at bay. Soothing extracts of lavender, mallow and cucumber will deeply hydrate your skin. It’s perfect for skin which creates excess oil and helps to hydrate without leaving the skin feeling greasy.

Jan Marini Daily Face Protectant SPF30

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; even if you live in the UK, you still need a daily SPF on your face to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays, otherwise they will exacerbate the signs of aging. This daily-use face protectant from Jan Marini is SPF30 and will provide your skin with a water-resistant broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. As well as this, it will help to control the oil production in your skin while providing advanced hydration, allowing you to give you a skin a wash of moisture and daily protection without any additional oil which could exacerbate sebum production.

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF30

This product from Dermalogica is a truly multifunctional formulation. As well as providing lightweight ultra sheer broad spectrum sun protection, it also helps to regulate oil production within the skin, preventing shine and soothing inflammation. It contains advanced oil absorbers which help your skin to have a matte finish all day long, but doesn’t leave the same powdery residue that other oil absorbing products might. It contains green tea leaf extract, a powerful antioxidant which helps to soothe inflammation and can rid your skin of the underlying causes of overproduction of oil.

Jan Marini Physical Protectant SPF30

This sunscreen from Jan Marini is so much more than just sun protection and is actually a bit of a miracle product in a bottle! The weightless formula contains a universal tint and microscopic oil absorbing particles which will leave your skin with a sheer matte finish all day long. It contains green tea extract and alpha bisabolol, which give enhance antioxidant properties while soothing and calming the skin. It’s suitable for all skin types and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes, making it the perfect product to take on holiday with you.

How to Keep Your Make Up in Place in a Heatwave

Royalty-free Image

Okay, lets be real – summer hasn’t exactly hit us with much in the way of a heatwave, despite what the tabloids keep telling us. However, it’s only the beginning of July and we’re hopeful that things will get a lot warmer in the coming weeks. With this in mind, we thought we’d share a few handy tips on how to keep your make up in place once the British Summertime decides to switch on the heaters!

Prep Your Skin

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your face is totally clean, but without inflaming your skin or making it hotter than it already is – the cooler your face is when th make up goes on, the better staying power it will have. Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser is a soothing, pH-balanced gel/cream that glides easily over face to cleanse and cool sensitised or highly reactive skin.

Tone it Down

Next, you should opt for a toner which will cool and calm your skin; we’d recommend Dermalogica All Over Toner. This little spritz will refresh and purify your skin and contains cooling ingredients which will purify your skin before your next step. Allow it to really sink into your face before you move on.

All About the Base

Once you’ve got your skin cool and clean, adding a base for your make up to cling to will increase your chances of getting it to stay put. A high-quality primer such as Dermalogica SkinPerfect Primer SPF30 is remarkably lightweight but very effective in terms of keeping your makeup in place. In addition, it cools your face when applied and even offers sun protection, which is an added bonus on sweltering days.

Think About Your Products

You can apply all the magical stuff in the world UNDER your make-up, but if you choose the wrong make-up products to begin with, you’re going to be on to a loser. Opt for oil-free foundation as this has a tendency to slide off of even the driest faces in the heat, and try to use waterproof eye products if you don’t want them to be affected by sweat.

Go For an Up-Do

You may want to wear your hair down in nice, beachy waves during a heatwave, but wearing your hair up and off of your face is far better for keeping your face in place! Hair around your face will not only increase your body temperature, and therefore your tendency to sweat, but will will also increase the amount of friction around your face, carrying your make-up away with the sweat.

Elemis Liquid Layer SPF30

We are constantly being reminder of the importance of using an SPF product to keep our skin healthy and protected from the sun, in the summer and during the rest of the year.

At Pure Beauty, we believe that incorporating sun protection into your everyday beauty routine is an absolute must, and we sell a range of products that help you to do exactly that.

If you are looking for an anti-ageing moisturiser with sun protection, the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF30 could be for you. This clinically proven (Independent Clinical Trials 2014) day cream is packed with powerful anti-ageing ingredients that help reduce the depth of wrinkles, improve firmness and hydrate the skin so it looks amazing. Padina Pavonica and Ginkgo Biloba improve suppleness and elasticity and a unique blend of sunscreen means you also get superior broad-spectrum protection, making this a winner in our book.

If you are looking for something that is water-resistant, we suggest trying the Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50. This broad-spectrum sun cream can be used on the face and body and is suitable for all skin types. The lightweight formula binds moisture to skin without leaving a greasy film and thanks to Oleosome microspheres, the SPF performance is enhanced but still apply at least 15 minutes before you go out in the sun and reapply after swimming, going in the sea or if you work up a sweat exercising.

At Pure Beauty we are massive fans of the Elemis Liquid Layer SPF30. Offering protection against UVA, UVB rays and pollution, this really is the first line of defence against sun damage and premature skin ageing. It works best when applied over your moisturiser and the white pigment of Titanium Dioxide helps scatter UVA and UVB rays and provide protection. Polymer Spheres also come into play and strengthen the work of the Titanium Dioxide by reflecting and refracting the UV rays. Impressive stuff, no? The overall results are that your skin is cared for and you have peace of mind when you are out in the sun – but try to wear a hat and sunglasses too when it is really hot.

The Decleor Protective Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF30 not only protects your skin from the sun but it also helps to prevent premature ageing and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This product can be used on all skin types and it is suggested that it is applied evenly on the face and neck at least 30 minutes before going into the sun and reapplied every two hours.

If you are looking for added protection and a natural look, we love the Dermalogica Sheer Tint SPF20. It comes in light, medium and dark options and gives you not only wash of colour but an extra shield against damaging UV rays. Hydrolyzed Pearl amino acids, Hyaluronic Acid and antioxidant Walnut Seed extracts offer hydration so that skin looks, and feels, soft and nourished.

New to our site is Jan Marini and their Daily Face Protectant SPF30 packs a punch when it comes to sun protection. This easy to apply cream is invisible, hydrating and weightless and not only feels amazing when you apply it to your skin, it smells pretty great too. Water resistant for up to 80 minutes, it is packed with skin conditioning oil absorbing particles as well as multiple antioxidants, making this the ultimate in daily SPF wearability.

If you would like more details about these, or any other products, get in touch today and we would love to help find something that is right for you and can send samples too.

The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Skincare

Royalty-free image

Whether you’re a young person who’s just started to take care of their skin, or an older person who’s steadfastly refused to deal with skincare before, being an absolute beginner can be a little intimidating, especially when you consider the vast amount of products available. We decided to put together some tips that we thing every skincare virgin should know, so that it doesn’t feel so daunting.

Take your make up off every day, no matter how tired you are

When you leave your make up on, not only are you leaving potentially comedogenic (that’s blackhead-forming, to you and me) products on your face, you’re also leaving the days dirt and grime. This can cause your skin to become dry, red, sensitised and generally unbalanced. Elemis Pro-Radiance Cream Cleanser is a great cleanser for most skin types as it melts make-up and removes the daily pollutants that can dull the skin.

SUNSCREEN!

Baz Luhrmann said it years ago, and it’s still as true as ever – “ALWAYS wear sunscreen”! The fastest way to age your skin is with prolonged, unprotected sun exposure, and this can be highly damaging even beyond the signs of ageing. Decleor Anti-Pollution Hydrating Fluid SPF30 is the perfect daily SPF for normal to dry skin and leaves skin feeling hydrated and comfortable.

Barely anyone has ‘perfect’ skin

We know that the slew of airbrushed images that we’re bombarded with makes it easy to believe that loads of people have perfect skin, but it’s actually very rare and we guarantee that almost every single person you asked would say they have at least one bugbear with their own complexion. Using a primer is a good place to start to get a flawless base before you apply your make up, allowing you to fake it all the way!

Know your skin type

When it comes to skincare, using the right type for your skin type is hugely important. If you have dry skin and are using products for normal skin, they won’t be powerful enough to keep you hydrated. If you’ve got normal skin, products for oily skin could dry you out and if you’ve got sensitive skin, anything perfumed or too rich will have you red and itchy. Use our guide to work out your skin type before you buy anything.

Drink plenty of water

You can use all of the moisturisers and skin-fixing products you like, but if your body is severely dehydrated then the source of your dryness isn’t going to be fixed. The old ‘eight glasses a day’ thing isn’t necessarily the right amount for everyone, but if your urine is almost clear and the skin doesn’t feel papery, you’re probably hydrated to a decent level.

Skincare for Tattoos

Skincare for TattoosGo back just 20 years and tattoos were not quite so mainstream, but here in 2016 it seems like everyone and their Nan is getting inked (seriously, we aren’t kidding about the Nan thing…last year almost 10% of over sixties were the proud bearers of tattoos and the number is expected to rise!). No longer are tattoos confined to the likes of sailors, footballers and ‘alternative’ types, which means that the stigma of body art is finally wearing away and we thought we’d put together some tips for how to care for tattooed skin.

Shave

Before you get tattooed, unless it’s on an area like the palm of your hand where hair never grows, there’s a good chance that your artist will shave the area. This is usually done dry, with a disposable razor, and doesn’t always make for the most comfortable experience! If you know where you’re being inked, shave before you go using Dermalogica Close Shave Oil to properly protect the skin, as well as Dermalogica Post Shave Balm to condition the skin. DON’T be tempted to wax as this can leave the skin broken and any tattooist worth their salt won’t put a needle on broken skin.

Keep it Clean

Directly after you’ve been inked and you’ve removed the dressing that your artist applies, it’s really important to clean the tattoo, which is effectively a big, open wound and is highly susceptible to infection. Use a really mild wash like Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, which is gentle and soap-free, is important for keeping it clean but make sure you pat it thoroughly dry with a clean, soft towel after washing.

Moisturise

There’s nothing that makes a tattoo look duller than dry skin, so using a rich, thick body cream on your skin will help to keep them vibrant and defined. Dermalogica Ultra Rich Body Cream is the perfect product for inked skin as it deeply moisturises and nourishes the skin without feeling oily and is even suitable for sensitised skin.

Protect

Over-exposure to the sun will literally murder a tattoo as the harmful UV rays can basically dissolve the inks in your skin, so covering yourself in a high factor SPF such as Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50 is essential. It’s important for another reason too – highly tattooed skin can effectively mask the early signs of skin cancer such as ragged edges or colour changing of moles, which means that you need to stay even more alert.
