www.pexels.comMindfulness is being talked about in the media today more than ever, but what’s it all about?

Quite simply, mindfulness is an awareness of ourselves as well as the world around us and it can improve our mental wellbeing, calming the mind and allowing us to focus on the here and now.

If we are more aware of the present moment, it can help us enjoy the world around us more and understand ourselves better. If this happens, we can experience and enjoy the people and things we have been taking for granted, and leave behind the stresses we don’t need.

What does it involve?
Just taking notice of your thoughts, feelings, sensations and the world around you is the first step towards mindfulness.
There are books, apps, and courses that give you a structured way to bring mindfulness into your life, but at the heart of it, what you are doing is stopping for a while and focusing on your breathing. You will then notice that your heart rate slows down, adrenaline production is reduced and you feel more relaxed. With practice you can develop greater focus, better sleeping patterns and start to feel happier as well.

It is true that some of us find the idea of sitting with our thoughts when we are stressed or unhappy, quite difficult, so we have some simple tips that could help you get to grips with mindfulness.

Mindfulness isn’t easy to learn at first, so you can start by reading up about it some more, taking a course, joining a group or using an app like Calm.

It is thought that just ten minutes of mindfulness meditation a day can bring massive benefits when it is done on a regular basis. If you can, do it at the same time each day – maybe when you are on the tube, at lunchtime or before you have a bath in the evening, and it’s at this time when you can really be at one with yourself and leave behind your worries and fears. Clear this space each day, stop everything else and practise your mindful meditation.

Start with short bursts of three, five or ten minutes – you can even do it on the train.

When you sit down to meditate, take a few moments to get comfortable. Notice the sounds around you and how you’re feeling. This will help your mind and body reconnect, so when you do start focusing on your breath, it’s a little easier.

When you are practicing mindfulness and meditating, all you need to do is notice your breath and when your attention wanders, which it will as you wonder what to eat for dinner or where to go at the weekend, let go of it and bring your focus back to your breath. Each time you do that, it’s a win and it gets easier.

When you progress and start to bring mindfulness to your daily life, our advice is to start slowly. We suggest that in week one, you are mindful when you are brushing your teeth – be aware of the sound, the smell, the taste, and the movement as you clean. Then build up slowly, adding a new thing each week, such as being mindful on your walk to work, or while stacking the dishwasher.

Mindfulness isn’t for everyone, but why not give it a try and in time we hope it can become a part of your life and one that will make things easier and happier for you.

Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil

After a long day at work, office drinks and having to stand up on the train all the way home, taking your make up off before jumping into bed might be the last thing you want to do. We get it, but we also know that leaving foundation, mascara and highlighter on as you sleep, can play havoc with your skin, so those extra few minutes in the bathroom before you hit the sack, are totally worth it.

At Pure Beauty we think we have got this covered, and have something that will be right for everyone, whatever their age and however hard they like to party.

While getting that smoky eye perfect can take ages, taking it away is super easy with the Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make Up Remover. This efficient, clean-rinsing formula dissolves all traces of eye make-up including stubborn mascara, as well as heavy lip liner too. Oil and alcohol-free, as well as water-soluble, this conditioning gel not only cleans but thanks to Silk Amino Acids it helps to strengthen eye lashes and condition the delicate lid area at the same time. Simple to use, this gentle formula won’t cause irritation or stinging, which makes it perfect for all skin types and ideal for contact lens wearers – just remember to take those babies out before nodding off!

Teenagers love make-up and sleep, so they might want to try the Dermalogica Foaming Wash if they want to keep their skin blemish free. Orange Peel and Tea Tree Oil energises and refreshes skin, while Salicylic Acid deals with dead cells and trapped oil so that breakouts are tackled and kept under control. Gentle but effective, this face wash can be used morning and evening and is the perfect introduction to a great skin care routine for life.

If you like make-up with staying power, the Elemis Nourishing Omega-Rich Cleansing Oil could be good for you. Brilliant for removing waterproof make-up, and ideal for oily skin, this popular cleanser not only soothes and softens your skin but it lifts impurities away at the same time.

Want to try something new, then how about the Decleor Bi-phase Caring Cleanser and Makeup Remover? Powered by a scientific blend of Virgin Botanical Oils and Floral Water, not only does this product cleanse and nourish your skin, but it takes away all traces of make-up too. Decleor have create a revolutionary formula which softens, plumps and soothes skin which together boosts radiance, so add it to your basket and put it to the test.

For clean, smooth, refined skin you don’t need surgery, what you need is the Jan Marini Bioglycolic Facial Cleanser. We love this gentle, soap-free cleanser because not only does it wash away the day, but it leaves your skin feeling amazingly hydrated thanks to sorbitol, a natural humectant derived from berries. The non-irritating formula easily rinses away, and works well with the brand’s Bioglycolic Bioclear Cream which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scarring, large pores and uneven texture.

If you would like more information about any of these products, or are interested in trying some samples before making a decision, get in touch today and we would love to help you get things right.

Unplug and live life

www.pexels.com

Sunday 25th June marked National Unplugging Day, the third of its kind in the UK and something we think will grow and grow as more and more of us question just how much time we spend online.

National Unplugging Day is a day all about breaking free from technology and having fun with family and friends away from the screens and gadgets many of us use for more than eight hours a day.

Taking a break from social media is easier said than done as it is part of everyday life, but we have some ideas that might work.

Rather than starting your day checking Facebook, why not kick it off with a decent breakfast, yoga session of do a little meditation. Concentrate on you first thing, then worry about how many ‘likes’ you’ve had over night.

Go old skool and rather than buying the latest novel on your Kindle, got for the paperback and read it on the train or bus and we think you’ll become so absorbed you’ll forget to check your phone.

One day a week, maybe a Sunday, turn off all devices and have a totally unplugged day. Meet friends (no selfies over lunch), go to the gym, have a bike ride, visit a museum – the ideas are endless and none of the require technology.

Pick a sport, any sport but one that means you can’t look at your phone. Tennis, badminton and netball are all fast paced and need 100% focus, so unlike golf or running, you can sneak a peek at Snapchat every now and again.

Turn apps off. Remember the days when a phone was a phone? Go back to those times and take social media off your mobile and limit the amount of time you can check on what your boyfriend had for dinner or where the girls are planning to go at the weekend. The end of apps doesn’t mean the end of the world!

If you do work at a computer, turn the Wi-Fi off and simply concentrate on your ‘to do list’. OK, you might need to do some research for a presentation or look at stats for a report but other than that, leave social media behind and you will be amazed at how much you get done.

When you do leave work, really make sure you leave it behind. Turn on your email “out of office”, don’t divert works calls to your personal mobile, and don’t check emails until you return to your desk. Very little is so urgent that it can’t wait, even if you are the Prime Minster it seems!

Be in the moment. Rather than head down and eyes on the screen, you will get so much more from life by actually living it. Go for a walk but don’t take Google maps. Get on a train and see where it takes you, without looking at a travel and rather than sending your flatmate a text, leave them a note, go on, give it a go.

Don’t only ban tech from the bedroom, also give it a bedtime! Agreeing that you will turn of the screens an hour before you hit the sack will mean you and your brain start to slow down and turn off and really get some decent rest.

Buy an alarm clock. Out of touch we know, but if you wake up to the alarm on your phone or iPad, chances are you will check them before you go to sleep or if you wake up in the night. If they aren’t around, you can’t look and won’t get distracted for hours.

We aren’t saying do all of these tomorrow, but over time just watch how long you spend plugged in and think about what life might be like if you were unplugged.

Life is easier with happy hacks

www.pexels.com

In a world that is super-busy, never has it been so important to take care of ourselves been so important, but this isn’t always easy.

You might think that not removing your make-up or skipping that dentist appointment might not matter, but overtime these little blips add up and could actually be more damaging that you thought.

We have put together some really easy health and wellbeing hacks that won’t eat into your day but will make a big difference to your life in the long run.

While many of us reach for the caffeine first thing, a mug of lukewarm water with lemon and cayenne pepper (we know) is way better. This creative combo wakes up your organs and both lemon juice and cayenne pepper have anti-fungal, immune boosting, detoxification properties that you will love more than the taste. Lemon juice also naturally helps with digestion and drives away bacteria and cleanses the system. What are you waiting for, put the kettle on.

We know that snacks like crisps, M&Ms and gummy sweets aren’t good for us but it is better to have a few rather than the whole lot. Why not put small portion into plastic bags and keep ONE in your desk drawer to curb that 4 p.m. craving?

The 5/7 diet is pretty popular and can be effective, but do you know about the 20/20/20 rule? If you stare at a computer all day and want to reduce eye strain and irritation, take 20 seconds to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. Go on, we dare you.

The buffet at a party can be a real draw, especially after a drink or two. To stop the damage to your waistline before it starts, eat a plate of raw veggies before you leave the house to give your stomach a head start and allow yourself to feel fuller for longer.

If you are an habitual class dodger, book your yoga or spinning session in advance. The thought of being charged and wasting your hard-earned cash could be enough to make you get up and go.

Looking for inspiration for changing your home? Don’t splurge on magazines which will be out of date by the end of the month, instead make Pinterest your friend…you won’t regret it.

Commuting by bus or train needn’t be a headache. Use this time to meditate, do an online shop, read or catch up on emails.

If you want a few extra minutes in bed, layout your clothes the night before. From pants and socks to jeans and glasses, get your look sorted before you go to sleep and life becomes instantly easier.

Feeling hot? Run your wrists under the cold tap for a minute and you will soon start to cool down.

We are constantly seeing scary stories about teeth whitening products so why not take away the risk and use banana peel instead? You have read right, banana peel can whiten your teeth! Take some peel and rub it around your top and bottom teeth for around a minute, and leave it on your teeth for a further 10 minutes. Then, brush your teeth and after doing this a couple of times a week, you will start to see a shiny difference.

Put a motivational meme on your phone and computer, it will work, #embracehappy

Got a hack you love, let us know so we can put it to the test.

www.pexels.com

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.

The history of Valentine’s Day is somewhat shrouded in mystery but we believe it is named after a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, with origins in the Roman holiday, Lupercalia.

Regarded by some as a commercial exploitation exercise and an excuse to spend money, 14th February is the traditional day of love around the world.

While it is love that counts, we have come up with a few ideas to make sure the person you love, really knows it.

Organise a picnic in the park complete with blanket, champagne and cake.

Book a table at the restaurant where you had your first date.

Send flowers to the office, but not roses, everyone will have those on their desks!

Surprise the one you love with a weekend away to a city you have never been to.

Have a photo album of your most treasured pictures created.

Buy them a star – a real declaration of love.

Propose.

Take a helicopter ride.

Go to a matinee at the cinema and hold hands in the back row.

Find a first edition copy of their first book.

Adopt a monkey, dolphin or elephant and share your love.

Go dancing.

Bake them a cake.

Buy silk pillowcases – they promote sleep and a gorgeous complexion.

Cook dinner at home and enjoy some quiet time together.

Take afternoon tea at a manor house.

Go on an open top bus tour and watch the buzz of the city under the stars.

Eat fish and chips on the beach.

Go to a cocktail making class.

Find the record of your song and have it framed.

Buy a diamond.

Go on a date if you are single.

Get on a train and see where it takes you.

Buy chocolates and give them to a stranger.

Renew your vows.

Go on a long bike ride and feel the air in your lungs.

Take an exotic holiday and get away form the cold and wet winter.

Go to the zoo.

Book tickets to the theatre.

Explore the woods.

Drive out to the countryside and have a pint by a roaring fire.

Take a boat trip along the river.

Sit in the stalls at the opera.

Book a personal shopper and add in some spending money for a fancy frock.

Climb a mountain together.

Serenade your loved one, if you have the voice for it or are feeling brave.

Go to Barcelona for lunch and Paris for dinner.

Spend the day at a spa being pampered.

Take to the skies in a hot air balloon.

Go to a rock concert.

Hold hands and walk along the beach.

Put photos of the two of you in a locket.

Buy them some beautiful Dermalogica products.

Take the day off work and do nothing at all.

Whatever you do and whomever you do it with, say I love you and mean it.
