Your Guide to the Best Moisturising Ingredients

Photo by Jessica Felicio on Unsplash

Skincare is one of those things which can be entirely subjective – a product which one person swears by could be far less effective for someone else. This is usually down to the key ingredients in each product and how our skin reacts to those ingredients. With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some of the best ingredients for hydrating your skin, to help you to choose which might be best for your skins’ individual needs.

Hyaluronic Acid

Most people have heard of hyaluronic acid, but people continue to be surprised that it’s a moisturising ingredient (maybe because of the common perception of what an acid usually does?). When you apply a hyaluronic acid serum to your skin, it acts like a sponge by attracting moisture to boost hydration on the surface of skin. Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer is a 3-in-1 treatment which harnesses the power of hyaluronic acid to offer maximum hydrators to resurface, smooth and brighten the skin without causing irritation or redness.

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids that help form the skin’s barrier and help skin retain moisture, while also helping the skin protect against environmental aggressors like irritants, and pollution. Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum is packed with ceramides which mimic the natural fats found in our skin to help lock in moisture and stop skin from drying out.

Glycerin

Glycerin is actually a bit of a special ingredient as it actually traps moisture from the environment around you, allowing your skin to absorb it, giving you a softer, more supple complexion. It’s often used in hand creams or areas which need an extra boost, but is also found in Elemis Daily Defence Shield SPF30, which protects the skin from environmental micro particles and harmful UV rays, as well as leaving the skin feeling nourished, soft and supple.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a ‘best of both worlds’ ingredient in that it act a both a mild exfoliant, as well as an humectant. This means that it gets rid of dead, dry skin cells at the same time as locking moisture in. It can be found in Dermalogica Biolumin-C Serum, which also exfoliates and reduces unbalanced pigmentation while nourishing the skin with moisture.

Urea

Urea might not sound like something you want to rub on your face, but it’s actually synthetic urea which features in skincare and it can be used to treat even the worst cases of dry skin, dermatitis and psoriasis. Urea works in part by loosening dry skin, and Dermalogica Age Reversal Eye Complex is made to target the eye area by reducing wrinkles, crows feet and puffiness which occur due to dehydration.

Dermalogica All Over Toner

New bags, shiny pencil cases, smart blazers and bus passes are often top of the list when it comes to back to school preparation, but what about skincare. Getting young people into a beauty routine is a good idea and what better time than now to introduce them to something new for their skin?

Cleanse, tone and moisturise is a good place to start, so we’ll give you the low down on that first and throw in some added extra so you’ve got all bases covered and top marks will be scored.

Clean skin is happy skin, so we would suggest using the Dermalogica Foaming Wash for deep cleansing and purifying morning and night. Perfect for teenage skin that is prone to acne and breakouts, this doesn’t strip away essential oils but instead washes away nasties that don’t help the skin. Meadowsweet has been added to protect against excess sebum, salicylic acid gently exfoliates away dead cells and reduces inflammation ,while tea tree oil kills bacteria.

Next to come into play is the Dermalogica All Over Toner. This refreshing, toner contains an impressive twelve gentle botanicals that refresh, energise and revive the skin in one go. We love that orange peel and lavender oil have been added to soothe skin and when you spray it onto the face, neck and back, after cleansing, the goodness gets straight to work.

Some people think that spotty skin doesn’t need to be moisturised, but this isn’t the case as the right products help skin look and feel better. What you might have been looking for is the Dermalogica Hydrating Lotion. This lightweight, easy to use cream helps soothe the discomfort caused by breakouts, while hydrating dry patches. Apply after toning and let the ginger, orange and grapefruit soothe and protect the skin, while plant based squalane softens and nourishes it.

OK, what next?

Well, we all love a pamper, so when the homework has been done, why not try a hot bath and pop on the Dermalogica Blackhead Clearing Fizz Mask. As you soak your troubles away, the mask will decongest skin so it is clear and blackhead free. Things don’t stop there, as added kaolin clay absorbs excess oil and apple is on hand to hydrate.

Last but not least, if the pimple pops up after PE, a bottle of Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Booster in the kit bag will do the job. Salicylic acid has been added to get rid of bacteria and phytoplankton extract prevents the over drying that can happen with some harsher products. The best thing is that it works in 15 minutes, so by the end of lunch skin can be smoother and worries will be over.

Fancy trying a sample or two? Get in touch and we would love to help.

How to Keep Your Make Up in Place in a Heatwave

Royalty-free Image

Okay, lets be real – summer hasn’t exactly hit us with much in the way of a heatwave, despite what the tabloids keep telling us. However, it’s only the beginning of July and we’re hopeful that things will get a lot warmer in the coming weeks. With this in mind, we thought we’d share a few handy tips on how to keep your make up in place once the British Summertime decides to switch on the heaters!

Prep Your Skin

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your face is totally clean, but without inflaming your skin or making it hotter than it already is – the cooler your face is when th make up goes on, the better staying power it will have. Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser is a soothing, pH-balanced gel/cream that glides easily over face to cleanse and cool sensitised or highly reactive skin.

Tone it Down

Next, you should opt for a toner which will cool and calm your skin; we’d recommend Dermalogica All Over Toner. This little spritz will refresh and purify your skin and contains cooling ingredients which will purify your skin before your next step. Allow it to really sink into your face before you move on.

All About the Base

Once you’ve got your skin cool and clean, adding a base for your make up to cling to will increase your chances of getting it to stay put. A high-quality primer such as Dermalogica SkinPerfect Primer SPF30 is remarkably lightweight but very effective in terms of keeping your makeup in place. In addition, it cools your face when applied and even offers sun protection, which is an added bonus on sweltering days.

Think About Your Products

You can apply all the magical stuff in the world UNDER your make-up, but if you choose the wrong make-up products to begin with, you’re going to be on to a loser. Opt for oil-free foundation as this has a tendency to slide off of even the driest faces in the heat, and try to use waterproof eye products if you don’t want them to be affected by sweat.

Go For an Up-Do

You may want to wear your hair down in nice, beachy waves during a heatwave, but wearing your hair up and off of your face is far better for keeping your face in place! Hair around your face will not only increase your body temperature, and therefore your tendency to sweat, but will will also increase the amount of friction around your face, carrying your make-up away with the sweat.

Answering Some Common Skincare Questions

Photo by averie woodard on Unsplash

We’re always happy to answer questions when our clients and customers ask for our expertise, and we often have the same questions asked time and again by different people. That’s why, we thought it would be a good idea to put together a post containing some of the most common questions we get asked, to help all of our readers:

Where in my daily routine should I use a clay mask?

Well, this question is quite simple – you shouldn’t! Obviously, we love clay masks, but they don’t need to be used on a daily basis by anyone, even those of us with the oiliest skin. We recommend using a clay mask once a week as a treat for your skin to help balance oil and calm redness, but any more than this and you could dry your skin out too much.

Do I need to moisturise if I have oily skin?

YES! People with oily skin often make the mistake of thinking that they don’t need to moisturise, but actually, excess oil production is actually a rebound effect caused by dry skin. Dermalogica Matte Moisturiser SPF15 will balance the oiliness of your skin while adding a healthy dose of moisture, and will even protect your skin against the sun.

I like in the UK, the sun is a rare treat – do I really need SPF every day?

So many people in the UK fail to wear daily sun protection because they think the sun isn’t strong enough here to affect their skin, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The UK sun is more than strong enough to damage your skin so using something like Decleor Anti-Pollution Hydrating Fluid SPF30 will give you sun the protection it needs.

What is my skin type?

The best person to determine your skin type is you and no-one knows your skin as well as you do. It’s a pretty simple process to work out if your skin is dry, oily, sensitive or a combination of several skin types. Our blog post will help you to decide what your skin type is, to allow you to buy the best products for your skin.

What can I do to brighten my skin?

Dull, lifeless skin is one of the most common complaints of our customers, and it’s something that often takes a combination of products to improve. One of the best pieces of advice that we can give is to invest in the Dermalogica PowerBright TRx Treatment Kit, which contains a selection of miniature products to brighten the skin and improve skin tone, so you can see if they work for you before buying the full-size products.

These Unexpected Things Could be Making Your Complexion Worse

If you suffer with acne or have a tendency to break out in spots, there’s a good chance that you’re religious about sticking to a skincare routine. However, if it seems like your skincare isn’t doing a good job, you could be missing one of these five things, which can all exacerbate acneic skin.

Dirty Glasses

If you wear glasses, the frames are probably in contact with your skin for most of the day and can harbour germs and bacteria from the sebum in your skin. Failing to disinfect your glasses can cause nasty outbreaks, but try to use a plastic-friendly cleaner if your frames aren’t metal as high alcohol content could make them brittle.

Wash Cloths

If you use a washcloth like the Dermalogica Ultimate Buffing Cloth or Elemis Luxury Cleansing Cloth Duo, they probably do a great job of keeping your skin clean. However, keeping your cloths clean is imperative, so make sure you put them through the washing machine at least once a week to keep bacteria at bay.

Spicy Food

Even if you don’t have a specific food intolerance, eating spicy food can cause an inflammatory response in your body, which can lead to spots and redness on your face. Try to avoid food which is too hot, or if you must indulge, use Dermalogica Breakout Control afterwards.

Hair Products

Hair products go on our head, not your face, right? WRONG! Hair products can spread onto your face throughout the day and can block pores and cause inflammation. Try to avoid hair products which are wax-based if you’re prone to acne, and ensure you wash your hairline thoroughly with Dermalogica Foaming Wash in the evening, once your hair doesn’t need to remain styled.

Beards

Got a partner with a beard, or worse, stubble? Well, we hate to break it to you, but spending an extended amount of time kissing and cuddling a person with facial hair can have a terrible effect on your complexion. As well as being abrasive to the skin and causing redness and irritation, beards can also harbour bacteria (unless the wearer is scrupulous about cleanliness) which can make acne worse.
